En el curso se estudiarán las distintas manifestaciones y desarrollos de la literatura fantástica y popular en lengua inglesa, desde sus orígenes hasta su consolidación como uno de los pilares de la cultura contemporánea. Se tendrá en cuenta la dificultad de delimitar un canon fijo dentro de estos géneros, tanto por su constante evolución como por su permeabilidad a influencias culturales diversas, así como por su hibridación con otros géneros narrativos. Se prestará especial atención a las relaciones entre las condiciones sociales, culturales, ideológicas y políticas de los distintos contextos históricos y las producciones literarias, con énfasis en cómo estas obras articulan imaginarios colectivos, ansiedades sociales y deseos culturales. Asimismo, se analizará el papel de la industria editorial, los medios audiovisuales y las nuevas tecnologías en la expansión y transformación de la literatura fantástica y popular, así como su recepción crítica dentro y fuera del ámbito académico.

English
The course examines the various manifestations and developments of fantasy and popular literature in English, from its early origins to its establishment as a central part of contemporary culture. The difficulty of defining a stable canon within these genres will be taken into account, due to their continuous evolution, openness to diverse cultural influences, and frequent hybridization with other narrative forms. Special attention will be paid to the relationships between literary works and their historical, social, ideological, and political contexts, with a focus on how such works articulate collective imaginaries, social anxieties, and cultural desires. The course will also explore the role of the publishing industry, audiovisual media, and new technologies in the expansion and transformation of fantasy and popular literature, as well as its critical reception both inside and outside academia.

Introducir a los estudiantes en el debate crítico sobre la legitimidad, el valor cultural y la evolución histórica de la literatura fantástica y popular, con especial atención a su relación con la cultura de masas y los imaginarios sociales.

To present students with the most representative works of fantasy and popular literature in English, including novels, short stories, and other narrative forms, fostering critical analysis of their major themes, traditions, and authors.

To introduce students to the critical debate concerning the legitimacy, cultural value, and historical evolution of Fantasy and pop fiction, with special focus on its relation to mass culture and collective imaginaries.

To help students develop skills in reading and critical interpretation, encouraging their ability to analyze literary texts through multiple theoretical and contextual perspectives.

Para abordar el estudio de la literatura fantástica y popular en lengua inglesa, se tendrá en cuenta que las divisiones y autores propuestos no son excluyentes ni estrictos y podrían variar dependiendo de las necesidades del curso. Aun así, se establecerán una serie de bloques temáticos y cronológicos que permitirán a los estudiantes familiarizarse con la evolución histórica y la diversidad de esta tradición literaria:

To approach the study of fantasy and popular literature in English, we will acknowledge that the categories and authors outlined below are not mutually exclusive and may change according to the course's needs. Nevertheless, a series of thematic and chronological units will be proposed to help students navigate the historical development and diversity of this literary tradition:

0. General Introduction: What do we mean by fantasy and popular literature? Definitions, genealogies, theoretical debates.

1. Fantasy, horror, and weird fiction in the early 20th century
   (Possible readings: H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith).

2. The rise of secondary worlds: high fantasy in the 20th century
   (Possible readings: J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis).

3. Science fiction and the future: technology, rationalism, and dystopias
   (Possible readings: Isaac Asimov, Ursula K. Le Guin).

4. Fantasy, gender, and race: new voices from the margins
   (Possible readings: Octavia E. Butler, N. K. Jemisin).

5. Satirical fantasy
   (Possible readings: Terry Pratchett).

6. Popular literature in transmedia contexts: role-playing, video games, and expanded narratives
   (Possible readings: Vampire: The Masquerade; analysis of shared narrative universes).

7. The publishing industry, fandom, and critical reception: minor literature or dominant culture?

La evaluación tendrá un alto carácter práctico, valorándose, además de los resultados obtenidos en las pruebas que se lleven a cabo (40-70%), otras actividades como la realización de actividades y trabajos prácticos relacionados con los conocimientos adquiridos y/o las herramientas utilizadas (30-60%). Si el tamaño del grupo lo permite, la evaluación será continua y se basará en el debate en clase y trabajos escritos, así como en la realización de un examen final.

Evaluation will be based on the student's performance. It will take into consideration both test and exam results (40-70%) and other requirements, including in-class activities and written work connected to knowledge and tools acquired in the course (30-60%). If the group size allows, the assessment will be continuous and based on in-class debate, group work, individual written work, and a final exam.
