Este curso ofrece una visión panorámica del teatro inglés del Renacimiento, a través de la lectura y análisis de las obras de los grandes dramaturgos de la época: William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson , Christopher Marlowe, Thomas Middleton, John Webster, entre otros, haciendo hincapié en la función sociopolítica del género teatral.

This course offers a overview of Renaissance English Drama. In the course we will read and analyze works by outstanding playwrights of the period: William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe, Thomas Middleton, John Webster, amongst others. We'll focus on the social-political role of the theater as a literary genre.

Se realizará un estudio específico de la evolución y el desarrollo del teatro inglés durante el período del renacimiento. Se pretende familiarizar a los alumnos con los estilos que conforman los distintos períodos del corpus literario en Inglaterra (desde los albores del teatro renacentista hasta el cierre de los teatros al final del reinado de Carlos I, pasando por los períodos isabelino y jacobino).

Para conseguir los objetivos de esta materia se utilizarán las siguientes estrategias:

-Profundización en el teatro renacentista a través de sus textos.

-Iniciar al alumno en la lectura de textos críticos sobre el periodo.

-Incentivar la capacidad de análisis del alumno del corpus literario renacentista inglés en el contexto cultural.

-Desarrollar el juicio crítico personal del alumno como valor fundamental del graduado en estudios ingleses.


English:

This course will study the evolution of English theater during the Renaissance. The main aim is to familiarize students with the styles that characterize English canonical plays of the period —from the dawn of English theater until the closure of the playhouses after Charles I’s reign, exploring the Elizabethan and Jacobean artistic productions. The students will learn to produce their own critical discourse about the literary texts and their historical, social and artistic context.

To reach these objectives, the following strategies will be used:

- In-depth study of Renaissance drama though the close reading of its texts.

- Initiate students in the reading of critical studies about the period.

- Encourage students’ analytical capacity and critical exploration of English Renaissance drama so as to expand their knowledge of the historical period and its authors.

- Develop the student’s personal critical assessment as a fundamental value of an English degree graduate.
