 This course introduces students to theoretical and practical research skills in English Linguistics. This includes both theoretical knowledge of basic research methods,designs and tools, as well as the practical ability to undertake a short research project using those tools. At the end of the course, students will be able to master the knowledge and scientific methodologies related to English linguistics that prepare them for more advanced postgraduate studies. 

Regular class attendance is required. Regular participation in the class discussions and practical sessions is required. Assignments must be completed by the date they are due.

 

-To introduce students to the basic methods and tools for undertaking linguistic research in their area of interest. 

 

-To provide students with practical experience in undertaking a short research project. 

 

-To familiarise students with the use of computer analysis tools and technologies, their potential and limitations for linguistic research 

-Introduction: What is research? Research questions in Linguistics. Types of research questions. Operationalizing research questions. Implications for data, data collection and analysis. Overview of areas of study in English Linguistics. 
 

 

-Types of research methods: Qualitative, quantitative, mixed method designs. Qualitative research and analysis. Techniques and instruments. Mixed methods research and analysis. 

 

-Quantitative methods. Key concepts: variables, hypotheses, theories, reliability and validity. Research designs: longitudinal, cross-sectional, experimental, quasi-experimental. Techniques and instruments. Stages in quantitative data analysis. 

 

- Qualitative methods. Sampling in qualitative research. Ethnography. Interviews. Focus group interviews. Introspective methods, Case studies. 

 

- Corpus methods in Linguistics. Key concepts and issues. Compiling and annotating corpora. Types of corpora and corpus analysis software. 

 

- Data analysis in quantitative research. Key statistical concepts. Descriptive statistics. Comparing two groups: t-tests. Comparing more than two groups: ANOVA. Correlation. Non-parametric tests. 

 

- Data analysis in qualitative research. Qualitative content analysis. Grounded theory. Computer-aided analysis. 

 

 -Interpretation and presentation of results: Research ethics. Formal aspects of research. The research report format 

 

La evaluación será continuada a lo largo del curso y el estudiante entregará un trabajo final por escrito. Se valorará la participación en clase (10%), la cooperación en grupo, la realización puntual de las diversas tareas, la presentación de resultados de ejercicios prácticos y la calidad de los ejercicios y proyectos presentados (40%). El trabajo final consistirá en un proyecto de investigación a pequeña escala, que se presentará oralmente y de forma escrita y se computará con un 50% de la calificación final.
