Training Activities

During the development of the PhD in Chemical Engineering, the doctoral student must carry out a series of activities aimed at developing the competencies of the Programme. These activities will be certified by the supervisor/s and tutor in the doctoral student's Activity Document. Each year they must be mandatorily registered in the RAPI2 computer application of GEA (https://geanet.ucm.es/RAPI/faces/seleccionPerfil) (accessed while logged in), and must be approved by the tutor and supervisor/s. Annually, the programme's academic commission will evaluate the Activity Document together with the reports that the tutor and supervisor/s must issue for this purpose.

These activities are:

  • Presentation of research seminars: the doctoral student must prepare and present at least one formal seminar on the objectives, results and conclusions of their research. This activity is mandatory for all doctoral students in the Programme, both full-time and part-time. This activity serves to develop competencies: CB15 and CB16.
  • Attendance at research seminars: throughout the research period, the doctoral student must attend seminars and conferences, with a minimum of one per year, covering topics related to the Programme's research lines. The activity is mandatory for all doctoral students in the Programme. This activity serves to develop competencies: CB11 and CB12.
  • Attendance at scientific or technical specialization courses: The doctoral student may attend courses that provide access to knowledge about recent advances, both research contributions and techniques or methodologies needed for their research. This activity is optional and can be developed throughout the entire Doctoral Thesis. This activity serves to develop competencies: CB11, CB14 and CA02.
  • Participation in the preparation of publishable works in scientific journals: the doctoral student must promote and actively participate in the preparation of works containing original data from their research for publication in scientific journals. This activity constitutes a basic part of doctoral training as it includes the search and selection of scientific information and a synthesis and critical analysis of experimental results. This activity must be carried out by both full-time and part-time doctoral students. Account will be taken of cases where the results obtained during research are subject to intellectual property protection, which may prevent their publication in journals. This activity serves to develop competencies: CB11, CB12, CB13, CB14, CB15, CB16, CA01, CA02, CA03, CA04, CA05 and CA06.
  • Research stays at other centers: It is common for Thesis supervisors to recommend that their doctoral students carry out stays at research centers, national or international, focusing on research groups whose theme is close to what the doctoral student is developing in their Doctoral Thesis. Since their realization depends largely on available funding, it is considered optional. It should preferably be developed from the third year onwards. This activity serves to develop competencies: CB11, CB13, CB14, CB15, CB16, CA04, CA05 and CA06.
  • Attendance at Scientific Congresses: Doctoral students are encouraged to attend and participate in congresses, symposia, colloquia, workshops, etc., organized by different institutions, both national and international. It is not considered a mandatory activity and can be developed throughout the entire Doctoral Thesis. This activity serves to develop and complement competencies: CB11, CB13, CB15, CB16 and CB06.

The Postgraduate Commission of the PhD in Chemical Engineering organizes several research seminars each year in which doctoral students can participate or attend. In these activities, attendance is monitored with the aim of providing participating students with a certificate of completion. The UCM Doctoral School, through its training area (https://edoctorado.ucm.es/area-de-formacion), also organizes various activities that students can access.
