Basic Programme Information
PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering – UCM
The PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering at UCM is offered by the Faculty of Chemical Sciences, within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials.
Doctoral studies in Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Chemical Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid have a long tradition, with their distinct origin in the Doctorate in Industrial Chemistry, established at the Faculty of Chemical Sciences in 1944. The PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering began in the 1987–88 academic year, and with minor modifications continued until 2006–07, when the Official Postgraduate Programme in Chemical Engineering was approved. The PDIQ (PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering) first received the Quality Mention in 2004–05 (MCD 2004/0032, under Royal Decree 778/1998); it subsequently also obtained the Quality Mention for the Official Postgraduate Programme in Chemical Engineering (MCD 2006/00491, under Royal Decree 56/2005). The PDIQ, regulated by Royal Decree 1393/2007, was awarded the Mention of Excellence in 2011 (MEE 2011/0011).
The establishment of the PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering was authorised by the Regional Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Community of Madrid (CAM) through Order 3517/2014, published in the BOCM on 12 December 2014, and, by the Resolution of 25 February 2015 of the General Secretariat of Universities, the official status of the PDIQ and its registration in the RUCT (5601086) was established, as published in the BOE on 18 March 2015. The PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering was implemented in the 2014–15 academic year in accordance with the regulatory framework of Royal Decree 99/2011, replacing UCM's previous PhD Programmes in Chemical Engineering. The PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering, regulated by Royal Decree 99/2011, received a FAVOURABLE report from ANECA on 2 July 2014. In 2022, the Madrimasd Knowledge Foundation evaluated the UCM PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering, issuing its final report for the RENEWAL OF THE DEGREE of PhD in Chemical Engineering with a FAVOURABLE outcome on 13 December 2022.
In addition, since the 2017–18 academic year, the PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering has submitted its Annual Monitoring Reports to the UCM Quality Office, which has assessed on every occasion that the Programme MEETS the requirements set out in the Memoria Verifica (Verification Report).
The PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering is aligned with the principles of Royal Decree 822/2021, of 28 September, which establishes the organisation of official university education in Spain, regulating its structure, verification and quality. It is currently governed by Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January (BOE of 10 February), which regulates official doctoral education in Spain, as amended by Royal Decree 576/2023, of 4 July (BOE of 18 July); and by UCM's own Regulations on Doctoral Studies, approved by the UCM Governing Council on 29 October 2024 (BOUC of 9 December 2024), which develop and implement the provisions of Royal Decree 99/2011 and further develop the national and regional legal and regulatory provisions relating to official doctoral education. These Regulations govern the organisation and development of UCM Doctoral Studies and include the procedures for admission, permanence, development and evaluation of Doctoral Theses.
The Programme is attached to the UCM Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials and to the UCM Doctoral School (EDUCM), created by Agreement of the Governing Council on 30 May 2017 and officially established upon its publication in the BOCM on 29 June 2017. The EDUCM Regulations were approved by the Governing Council on 29 November 2016 and amended by Agreement of the Governing Council of 29 October 2024 (BOUC 9-12-2024). This affiliation ensures an organisational structure consistent with contemporary science policies and allows the Programme to become part of an interdisciplinary academic network, facilitating collaboration with other PhD Programmes, access to cross-disciplinary training and the internationalisation of research activity.
The PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering falls under ISCED (International Standard Classification of Education) area code 524.
The PhD Programme in Chemical Engineering currently involves more than 30 PhD faculty members (see staff) and has an average annual enrolment of 10 new students.
