PhD Programme in Advanced Chemistry at UCM

Chemistry is a well-established discipline at national and international level that shows a high degree of interaction with other areas of knowledge such as physics, biology, medicine, materials science and technology and various engineering disciplines.

The influence of chemical research in the progress and social advances of the last centuries is indisputable and will continue to be crucial in the future to face the challenges that humanity will have to face and to ensure the sustainability of the planet. Basic research, combined with targeted research in chemistry, ensures a reservoir of knowledge, provides alternatives for future societal needs and continuously affects people in all aspects: food, hygiene, health, housing, transport, leisure, environment, etc.

From an economic point of view, research and technological innovation are necessary for the development of products with high added value. The chemical sector has a high rate of diversification and a broad technological content, highlighting its innovative nature as a supplier of new products and materials, as well as new technologies through the different traditional subsectors that make it up: basic chemistry, materials chemistry, nano-chemistry and analytical techniques.

In Spain there are numerous research groups in the field of chemistry of recognised prestige and outstanding international standing. Scientific production in chemistry as a whole is abundant in high impact journals and is above the national average.

Doctoral studies in Chemistry at the Complutense University of Madrid have a long and recognised track record. The Departments involved in the programme, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and the Teaching Unit of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, have traditionally developed quality PhD programmes and this has been recognised by the Ministry of Education on different occasions. The PhD Programme in Advanced Chemistry began in the 2014-2015 academic year in accordance with the regulatory regulations R.D. 99/2011 and has the mention of excellence (MEE2011-0111) by resolution of 6 October 2011 (BOE 20/10/2011). The outstanding track record of the PhD researchers participating in the programme and their research excellence endorse the quality of the programme.
