Bosnia-Herzegovina, from Dayton to Europe

The 20th anniversary of the Dayton Agreement, which ended the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, will take place in November 2015. The institutional framework set by the Agreement aimed at guaranteeing peace and the collective interests of three ethnic groups – Bosnians, Serbs and Croats; however, the result has been a weak state, with enormous difficulties to apply the reforms that would allow for a stable and prosperous future.

Frustration about social, political and economic stalemate and the lack of perspectives, have led to demonstrations and protests in the last months. Meanwhile, the “promise” of a future within the European Union is still the only common point of the different political and ethnic parties.

Despite the geographical distance and the little historical tradition between Spain and the Balkans, Spain has had a special relationship with Bosnia-Herzegovina for the last two decades, be it in the military, the humanitarian or the diplomatic fields.

The purpose of this seminar is to draw a balance of these last 20 years, and, mostly, to try to make an analysis of the possible paths for the future, including the EU perspective.

Tuesday, 10 November 2015, Sala de Juntas, Facultad de CC Políticas y Sociología, Campus de Somosaguas Universidad Complutense, Madrid (UCM)

The event will be held in English, under the Chatham House Rule.  For more details, please see the program.
