Piedad Tolmos Rodríguez-Piñero

Degree in Mathematical Science from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, taking doctorate courses at the Department of Applied Mathematics of the UCM and subsequently defending her thesis "Selection of risk factors and prediction of claims in motor insurance through machine learning techniques", directed by Dr Antonio Heras (UCM) and Carlos Bousoño (UC3M) at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. Her lines of research focus on applications in the actuarial field of different artificial intelligence techniques, Mathematics Teaching, the application of new technologies in mathematics teaching and learning and mathematics teaching in teacher training at pre-university stages. She has co-directed a thesis and has three more in progress in the field of Mathematical Education. She currently forms part of the Research Group STATISTICAL METHODS AND BIG DATA APPLIED TO THE ECONOMY, TOURISM

AND OTHER SOCIAL SCIENCES of the UCM, and the STEM Education Research Group of the URJC. She is also a member of the SiMiS Study Group, with which she pursues studies to improve the mathematical training of teachers in secondary education. She has published various articles connected with her fields of research, and participated at a number of specialist congresses.

Her professional career began in 1994 at the CESSJ Ramón Carande, followed by the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, with which she has been connected ever since. She held a number of positions before being awarded a TEU teaching position in 2001 followed by a TU position in 2009.

She has held a number of administrative posts, including Exchange Teaching Administrator for the Erasmus, Munde and Seneca programmes; Coordination of the Degree in Infant Education, Academic Department Secretary, and her current post as Department Director.

Her teaching focuses on mathematical subjects on a number of degree courses in the Social Sciences, and Mathematics Teaching on Education Degree courses. She also lectures on the Master's in Secondary and Baccalaureate Teacher Training and Language Teaching at the URJC, and on the Master's in Actuarial and Financial Science at the URJC. She has directed over 60 Final Degree Dissertations and Final Master's Dissertations on the degree courses in Infant Education, Primary Education, Actuarial and Financial Science and the Master's in Teacher Training.

She is currently involved in the Erasmus+ Project “MiniOpenLabs” and the “STEMind” project forming part of the Europe Research 2020 Dynamisation Actions

She has directed and participated in various Educational Innovation Projects dealing with mathematics teaching in the use of new technologies and methodologies in teacher training, one of which, initially sponsored by the company Microsoft, earned the CSI-F Finalist Award in the University Teaching category. She is currently developing the UCM Innova 317 Project “Design of good practices for mathematical training of Infant and Primary Education teachers: Level zero in mathematics and mathematics teaching subjects", together with a group of researchers from various universities in Madrid.
