Maria Vittoria Calvi

Maria Vittoria Calvi, professor of Spanish Language at the University of Milan since 2002, with extensive experience in research and in university teaching. Previously, she was a professor at the University of Bergamo and at the IULM University of Milan.

She was president of the Association of Italian Hispanists (2013-2017). She is the director of the Cuadernos AISPI journal. Hispanic languages and literature studies. Since 2016, she has been a corresponding member of the Royal Spanish Academy. In the same year, she was awarded the commission of Isabel la Católica for her work in the field of Hispanics.

She is part of the scientific committee of several Hispanic linguistics journals, such as Español actual, Ibérica, Oralia, Lengua y migración, and of the Board of Directors of the Association of Discourse Linguistics (ALD). She is the author of numerous linguistic studies, with special emphasis on contrastive linguistics of Spanish and Italian and specialty languages.

Among her contrastive linguistics works is a monograph on the problems of teaching and learning Spanish for Italians, Didattica di lingue affini. Spanish and Italian (1995), and a bilingual dictionary of neologisms and colloquial expressions, New Words - Parole nuove (1991, with S. Monti), in addition to several studies on the lexicon and neology in Spanish and Italian (“Notes on the adoption of Anglicisms in Spanish and Italian”, 1999; “Cultural terms in bilingual Spanish and Italian dictionaries: the case of autonomy and its derivatives” 2007).

She carried out pioneering studies in the field of specialised languages in Spanish, with special reference to the lexicon and the intercultural aspect of the language of tourism (Language and communication in Spanish for tourism, 2006; "Lexicon of specialty and language of tourism", 2016; “The Language of Tourism in New Travel Guides: Discursive Identities and Narratives”, 2017; "Discursive types, cultural diversity and translation of tourist texts", 2019). In this field, she was Chief Investigator and national coordinator of the PRIN 2007 project (2007ASKNML), focused on the language of Spanish-Italian tourism communication. She also devoted some studies to medical discourse ("Narrazione e identità discorsive nei forum di Medicina", 2017).

Among her most recent lines of research is the contact between Spanish and Italian in migratory contexts, due to the consistent presence of Latin American groups in present-day Italy, and the issue of the linguistic landscape ("Ethnic labels and identity in interviews with Latin American immigrants in Italy", 2015; "The Use of Deixis in the Oral Narratives of Latin American Immigrants in Italy", 2015;"Hispanic linguistic landscapes: panorama of studies and new perspectives", 2018; "Transnational practices and integration in the linguistic landscape of Milan”, 2020).

In the literary field, her works focused on the contemporary narrative and above all on the works of Carmen Martín Gaite (Dialogo e conversazione nella narrativa di CMG, 1990) and Luis Mateo Díez (“Léxico y modulación de los sentimientos en la narrativa de Luis Mateo Díez”, 2019). She published two volumes of unpublished manuscripts by the Salamanca author, Cuadernos de todo (2002), and El libro de la fiebre, 2007.
