The Fundación General of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in collaboration with  The Faculty of Physical Sciences of the UCM, organizes an intensive training course, taught in English, on two of the main renewable and sustainable energy sources: solar and geothermal.

The module on solar energy will be delivered by academic staff from the UCM Master’s Degree in Energy, who belong to the Department of Structure of Matter, Thermal Physics and Electronics, and to the Department of Earth Physics and Astrophysics. The course will cover the fundamentals of photovoltaic solar energy, the types of solar cells, and current materials and manufacturing techniques, as well as emerging trends; next, the integration of these cells into photovoltaic modules, systems, and installations, including the role of inverters, will be analyzed. Solar thermal energy will also be examined, from its physical principles and core technologies to its applications and industrial trends. Finally, the assessment of solar resources will be addressed, including its physical basis, global and local resource attenuation effects, and primary measurement methods.

The module on geothermal energy will be conducted by academic staff from the Department of Earth Physics and Astrophysics and will provide an overview of the physical fundamentals of geothermal energy, the temporal and spatial scales of heat flow, geodynamic controls, and integrated geothermal exploration (electromagnetic methods, hydrothermal alteration, etc.). The geothermal resource will be linked to the structure and dynamics of the lithosphere, with a particular emphasis on the near-surface geotherm. Finally, the assessment of this resource will be studied by incorporating artificial intelligence techniques.

Theoretical lectures will be complemented by case studies, practical demonstrations, and laboratory visits.
