My name is Julia López Narváez and I am currently pursuing a PhD in English Linguistics at Complutense University of Madrid. Prior to this project, I obtained a degree in Translating and Interpreting Studies at Autónoma University of Madrid. While at university I spent a year at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, as an Erasmus student. I also hold a Master’s degree in Literary Translation (First Class) at Complutense University of Madrid.

My current research focuses on the linguistic construction of a multi-voiced perception of Thomas Hardy’s stereotype of a fallen woman. In my PhD dissertation, supervised by Paloma Tejada Caller and Rebeca Gualberto Valverde, the main hypothesis aims to verify to what extent Tess’s multifaceted identity differs from the literary stereotype, regarding the dynamic interplay of categorising and comparative voices. My main areas of research are cognitive linguistics, linguistic subjectivity, perspective and gender studies. I am also very interested in the Victorian era, stereotypes, and in Thomas Hardy’s ground-breaking works.

In addition, I am the student representative in the quality subcommittee of the PhD Programme in English Linguistics. I was an honorific collaborator in the English Department at UCM (2018-2021). Since 2021 I teach in the same department. I was a member of the organising committee for UPCEL 2020 and UPCEL 2022 (UCM Predoctoral Conference on English Linguistics).
