My name is Ana García Crespo and currently I am doing my PhD in English Linguistics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). I completed my degree in English Studies from the same university and, thanks to the Erasmus+ programme, I spent a year abroad at the University of Southampton (United Kingdom), where I discovered my passion for linguistics, and, especially, for Discourse Analysis. After I graduated, I decided to continue working on linguistics and completed a MA on English Linguistics: New Applications and International Communications (UCM). While I was pursuing my MA, I received an offer from IES Madrid to work as a Spanish Teacher Assistant in the United States of America. Therefore, I spent the year 2019/2020 in Scripps College (Claremont, California), where I worked in the Department of Spanish, Latin American and Caribbean Literatures as a Teacher Assistant, where I had other duties such as helping the department to promote and organise activities related to Spanish language and its culture.

At the same time I was studying and developing my passion for linguistics, I started working in a language school in Madrid as a teacher of English. Although I have had students from a broad range of ages, I focused on teachers who needed preparation for official examinations to be able to work in bilingual schools.

My research focuses on the representation of men and women’s roles in online press written in English and Spanish language. In the past, when researching on language and gender, I realised how crucial was to understand how men and women were portrayed in media. Consequently, I decided to devote my research to such representation. My thesis’ tittle is Gender representations in the media: a contrastive study of English and Spanish media. In my research, using the Critical Discourse Analysis lens, I study how men and women are represented and understand how these representations are made and how language triggers such representations.
