Goals and Skills

GOALS

The programme PhD-EngLin-UCM aims to:

  • Ensure the acquisition and development of a series of BASIC, PERSONAL AND SPECIFIC SKILLS on the part of the student throughout their training period, which, once they graduate, will allow them to: a) develop their PROFESSIONAL CAREER in a demanding job market; and b) conduct and present relevant RESEARCH RESULTS in a professional manner.
  • Explore and disclose specific areas of knowledge which place THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE OF THE 21ST CENTURY in the social field, outside the disciplinary boundaries of traditional philology.
  • Contribute to the DESIGN OF ACTION POLICIES which may address the dynamics and effects of globalization on (the Spanish) society.
  • Give SOLUTIONS TO KEY CHALLENGES of contemporary society concerning:
    • the teaching of English as a second language, as a foreign language, as a language of communication in different professional contexts and, very
      specifically, as a content and language integrated learning tool.
    • the integration of diversity through research on properties and complexities, evolution and classification of sign languages.
    • the linguistic construction of identity, stereotypes and the role English plays in shaping beliefs and behaviours.
    • the development of computerized tools and corpora which make research on English and Spanish languages progress.
  • Help our PhD students to secure a position in the INTERNATIONAL LABOR MARKET in optimal conditions, using English extensively throughout their training period.

SKILLS

Skills expected from PhD Students respect fundamental and equality rights, the values of democracy and a culture of peace and ensure the principles of equal opportunities and universal accessibility for disabled people.

  • The BASIC SKILLS (BS), OR GENERAL FUNCTIONAL KNOWLEDGE, the
    student must develop, following the specifications from the article 4.1 of the RD 99/2011 of the 28th of January, are the following:
    • BS1. Systematic comprehension of a field of study and mastery of the skills and research methods associated with that field.
    • BS2. Skill to conceive, design or create and develop a solid process of creation or research.
    • BS3. Skill to contribute to the expansion of knowledge through original research.
    • BS4. Skill to perform critical and evaluation analyses, as well as syntheses of new and complex ideas.
    • BS5. Skill to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general about their areas of knowledge in the ways and languages commonly used in the international realm.
    • BS6. Skill to promote scientific, technological, social, artistic or cultural development in a knowledge-based society.
  • The PERSONAL ABILITIES (PA) specified in the article 4.2 of the RD 99/2011 of the 28th of January , are the following:
    • PA01. Ability to operate in contexts in which little specific information is available.
    • PA02. Ability to find the key questions that must be answered in order to solve a complex problem.
    • PA03. Ability to design, create, develop and undertake new and innovative projects in their field of knowledge.
    • PA04. Ability to work both in team and independently in an international or multidisciplinary context.
    • PA05. Ability to integrate knowledge, handle complexity, and formulate judgments with limited information.
    • PA06. Ability to offer Intellectual criticism and defend specific solutions.
  • Last, the PhDEngLin-UCM will allow the PhD student to acquire other SPECIFIC SKILLS (SS) private to its particular area of knowledge:
    • SS01. Skill to compare and contrast two different socio-cultural and linguistic realities as those concerning the Spanish-speaking and the Anglo-Saxon worlds. The student will acquire the ability to weigh up research in the field of English linguistics and assess its impact on modern Spanish society, as well as on the processes of social integration in the international sphere, considering historic, socio-cultural and ethical variables
      prevailing in the Anglo-Saxon world.
    • SS02. Skill to read, speak and write at an academic and professional C1 level (CEFR) of English, enabling students to carry out activities such as teaching, publication in scientific journals, writing book reviews, presenting research results at seminars,
      participating in meetings and conferences and writing their PhD theses in English.
    • SS03. Skill to handle computer tools and highly specialized software programs and applications which apply to research in English linguistics, particularly those related to corpus and statistical analysis. Similarly, ability to handle these tools and software programs to disseminate knowledge and encourage discussion in professional and specialized fields.
