María Vallet-Regí is the 8th most influential researcher worldwide in Biomedical Engineering and first female Spanish scientist, according to PLOS Biology.

The prestigious statistician John Ioannidis (index h=219) has been searching for years for a method to rank researchers according to the influence they exert on the scientific community. In 2019 he published with Boyack and Baas an article in PLOS Biology explaining their method, along with a table of the most influential researchers up to 2018. In 2020 he updated the table with data up to 2019 and on October 19 of 2021 they updated it again with data available in Elsevier´s Scopus database up to August 2021 [1]. In this last update we can see that Prof. María Vallet-Regí:

1) She occupies the 8th position of the 64,425 scientists researching in Biomedical Engineering, both throughout her entire scientific career and if we focus on the year 2020.

2) She is the first Spanish female scientist in 2020 occupying the 1,679th position of the 190,064 classified researchers, all of them occupying the first 2% of their research area.

3) She occupies the 16th position of all the Spanish scientists in any discipline throughout her scientific career.

4) She has managed to get 4 of his collaborators, Drs. Isabel Izquierdo, Daniel Arcos, Miguel Manzano and Antonio Salinas, all members of the GIBI group of Universidad Complutense de Madrid, to appear in this select list in which, as has been said, only scientists occupying the first 2% of their category appear.
