SINOPSIS

COMPETENCIAS

ACTIVIDADES DOCENTES

Clases teóricas
Masterclasses (lectures). Short exercises and practical cases (discussion sessions, case reports, alumni presentations): Each week is divided into lectures and group work. Lectures provide a theoretical foundation for understanding the cultural dynamics of tourism in Europe. Through an anthropological lens, students will explore key themes such as cultural transformation, commodification, authenticity, and resistance in tourist destinations. The focus is on analyzing case studies across Europe to understand the complex interactions between locals, tourists, and anti-tourists.
Clases prácticas
Practical Classes: Group work takes place once a week and focuses on applying the theoretical concepts to specific European case studies. Students will work in small groups to analyze, discuss, and propose solutions to real-world tourism-related cultural challenges. Critical debates on selected texts (to be read beforehand) will also take place. Assignments are uploaded to the Campus Virtual platform and discussed in class, with input from the instructor to complement their analysis. These group tasks are mandatory and will be included in the final exam.
Trabajos de campo
The course concludes with a fieldwork session in Madrid, where students will observe and analyze the cultural dynamics of tourism in real time. Students, divided into three or four groups, will analyze different locations in Madrid city and will submit a concise report summarizing their findings and proposing strategies for culturally sustainable tourism in Madrid. This will serve as a culmination of the theoretical and practical components of the course, integrating anthropological insights into real-world applications. Active participation during the fieldwork and discussion will contribute to the course assessment.
Presentaciones
The last session (or two, depending on the number of students) of the course will be shaped according to the "flipped classroom" format. In it, students will present for 30 minutes their fieldwork research results, in groups of 3 or 4.
Otras actividades
Other Activities: Attendance at events relevant to the course and related to European tourism and itsimpacts is planned.
