Objectives
The Master’s Degree in Research in English-Language Literatures and Cultures (MILCA, in Spanish), taught entirely in English, answers the demand for specialized training in literatures in English in order to acquire the necessary skills for research in this field, such as writing and presenting ideas, working with primary and secondary sources, and the ability to think critically and debate complex ideas. In addition, the contemporary nature of the master’s, both in its teaching of recent and innovative critical theories and in literatures and texts of particular relevance in recent decades, highlights the social importance of English-language literary and cultural studies. Therefore, the main objectives of this degree are:
1. Acquiring advanced knowledge of the main theoretical and methodological trends applied to English-language literary and cultural studies.
2. Deepening the critical analysis of English-language literature and cultures from an interdisciplinary and intercultural perspective.
3. Developing advanced skills in the interpretation and discussion of literary and cultural texts in English.
4. Examining the relationships between literature and society in English-speaking contexts, paying attention to their dynamics of change and continuity.
5. Studying the processes of identity construction in English-speaking literature and culture, with special attention to issues of gender, race, and postcolonialism.
6. Applying research methodologies in the humanities to the development of original studies in the field of English-speaking studies.
7. Fostering critical and reflective thinking about literary and cultural production in English-speaking countries.
8. Relating literary texts to other cultural, artistic, and media manifestations in the English-speaking world.
9. Developing advanced academic writing skills for the production of essays, scientific articles, and research papers related to the English-speaking world.
10. Using primary and secondary sources in research on English-speaking literature and culture critically.
11. Designing innovative research projects that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in English-language literary and cultural studies.
