Master's Degrees

Admission Requirements

1. General regulations and admission procedure

Applicants' admissions and enrollment are ruled by Royal Decree 822/2021 of September 28, which establishes the organization of university education and the procedure for ensuring its quality, specifically in Article 18 for Master's degrees.

Likewise, the admission procedure will be carried out in accordance with the Regulations of the Complutense University of Madrid, which can be consulted on the UCM transparency portal and, specifically for Master's degrees, under Requirements for access and admission to Master's studies.

Similarly, the UCM Equality Unit's website provides access to the Protocol for Action against Sexual and/or Sexist Harassment, which is part of the UCM's Second Equality Plan, guaranteeing compliance with the principle of gender equality in all cases.

Furthermore, the UCM addresses non-discrimination through the Office for the Inclusion of People with Diversity (OIPD), a unit responsible for the Complutense University of Madrid and accessible from its website.

2. Specific admission criteria for the Master's Degree in Research in English Literature and Culture

The Master's Degree follows the general criteria established by the UCM for admission to master's degrees. There will be no specific entrance exam.

2.1. Recommended entry profile

2.2. Language of instruction for the Master's Degree

Applicants must demonstrate C1 level proficiency in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), either through official certificates or by taking the official CERTACLES accreditation exam organized by the CSIM.

According to the Governing Council Agreement of January 29, 2019 (BOUC of February 7, 2019), which approves the Spanish language requirements for admission to Bachelor's and Master's degrees and language skills, all students from non-Spanish-speaking countries or educational systems must demonstrate knowledge of Spanish at CEFR level B2 at the time of applying for admission to the Master's degree.

2.3. Assessment criteria for admission to the Master's Degree

The Master's Degree Coordination Committee is responsible for the admission process.

Priorities for admission

The master's degree programs at the Complutense University of Madrid may require applicants to meet certain prerequisites in terms of qualifications and training and/or to pass an entrance exam to be admitted. Likewise, admission to master's degree programs may prioritize certain profiles, as established in their course description.

Assessment criteria for admission and justification of merits

In general, the preferred criterion for ranking applications will be the students' academic records. Master's programs that require it may carry out this ranking, taking into account applicants' overall curriculum. The assessment of applicants' curricula and their subsequent prioritization may, where appropriate, take into account other evaluation criteria, specifying the weight of each of them in the final assessment. These criteria may include, among others, the following:

  • Assessment of specific prior studies
  • Previous professional experience in the field of knowledge of the master's degree

Students shall accompany their application with supporting documentation of their assessable merits.

3. Admission

The decision about the admission process will be made by the Provost or the Deputy Provost to whom they delegate, and will be carried out in accordance with the rules, priorities, and assessment criteria established in these regulations. It will be carried out through a procedure based on criteria of merit, equality, and ability.

The assessment criteria and their weighting shall be as follows:

  • Grade point average of the student's academic record: 40%. Grade on a scale of 0-100
  • Suitability for the profile: 40%. Grade on a scale of 0-100. Preferred profiles: up to 100 points; secondary profiles: up to 70 points; other profiles: up to 40 points
  • Documented professional or research experience related to English-language literary and cultural studies: 10%. Graded on a scale of 0-100
  • Other merits (languages, awards and recognitions; other academic training; internships; scholarships; mobility for training): 10%. Graded on a scale of 0-100.
