PhD Scholarship position in the Plasma Spectroscopy Laboratory at the University of Valladolid (Spain)

Supervisor: Dr María Teresa Belmonte Sainz-Ezquerra (teruca.opt.uva@gmail.commariateresa.belmonte@uva.es)

PhD Program: PhD in Physics

Scientific areas: atomic spectroscopy, measurement of atomic parameters and application to astrophysics.

Topic of the project: Measurement of heavy element atomic parameters of astrophysical importance.

The aim of this project is the generation and analysis of heavy element spectra to obtain high quality atomic data (transition probabilities, wavelengths) urgently needed by astronomers to interpret astronomical spectra. This project will be carried out in the Plasma Spectroscopy Laboratory at the University of Valladolid (Spain). To measure outside the spectral range of our instrument we anticipate short visits to Imperial College London (UK), Lund University (Sweden) or the National Institute of Standards and Technology (USA), our international collaborators.

Candidate profile: the candidate will have a degree in Physics and a Masters in a relevant field. This project requires experimental skills and a familiarity with data analysis and concepts of atomic physics. It is essential to have teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate with international groups (in English). Knowledge of coding in Python is recommended.

Interested candidates, please feel free to contact me for any enquiry or for more information.

Duration: 4 years

Deadline: 7 June 2021 at 2 pm (Spanish time)
