De acuerdo con las competencias específicas del módulo, esta asignatura tiene como objetivo familiarizar al estudiante con el análisis de la literatura y la cultura en lengua inglesa, específicamente con manifestaciones culturales y literarias del siglo XIX. Se abordarán textos de los márgenes o no canónicos de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, incluyendo poesía, ficción, teatro y manifestaciones visuales.

El curso se estructura en cuatro bloques:

            1.         Los movimientos de vanguardia de la modernidad victoriana, como el pre-rafaelismo, el esteticismo y el decadentismo de fin de siglo.

            2.         La ficción popular, centrada en géneros como la literatura de aventuras, policíaca, de terror e infantil.

            3.         Las particularidades culturales del período conocido como “fin de siglo”, con especial atención al cambio de paradigma hacia la modernidad del siglo XX.

            4.         La recepción crítica de la cultura victoriana en los siglos XX y XXI, incluyendo el fenómeno neo-victoriano y otras revisiones contemporáneas.

Se tratarán los aspectos estéticos, culturales e ideológicos más relevantes de cada bloque. El objetivo es potenciar la capacidad de análisis de los estudiantes y fomentar el desarrollo de juicios críticos propios en relación con los textos de cada bloque.

Al finalizar la asignatura, el estudiante deberá ser capaz de:

            •          Identificar y analizar los elementos estéticos de los movimientos de vanguardia y la ficción popular del siglo XIX.

            •          Comprender las revisiones y reinterpretaciones de la cultura victoriana en los siglos XX y XXI, particularmente en la postmodernidad.

            •          Emitir juicios críticos fundamentados sobre las obras estudiadas y su relación con el contexto histórico.

            •          Analizar las influencias culturales y literarias que han dado forma al legado victoriano en la cultura contemporánea.

In line with the specific competencies of the module, this course aims to make students acquainted with the analysis of English-language literature and culture. It focuses on marginal or non-canonical works from the second half of the nineteenth century, including poetry, fiction, drama, and visual culture.

The course is structured around four key modules:

            1.         Avant-garde movements of Victorian modernity, such as Pre-Raphaelitism, Aestheticism, and Decadence at the fin de siècle.

            2.         Popular fiction, with a focus on genre literature including adventure, detective, horror, and children’s narratives.

            3.         Cultural particularities of the fin de siècle, examining the shift in cultural paradigms towards twentieth-century modernity.

            4.         The critical reception of Victorian culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including Neo-Victorianism and other contemporary versions of Victoriana.

The course explores significant aesthetic, cultural, and ideological aspects of each module. It seeks to develop students’ analytical abilities and to foster independent, critical thinking in relation to these specific texts and movements.

By the end of the course, students will be expected to:

            •          Identify and analyse the aesthetic elements of nineteenth-century avant-garde movements and popular fiction.

            •          Understand the revisions and reinterpretations of Victorian culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, particularly during post-modernism.

            •          Produce well-reasoned critical responses to literary texts of the 19th century, considering their historical and cultural contexts.

            •          Examine the lines of influence that have shaped the cultural and literary legacy of Victorian cultures of diference in contemporary contexts.

    4.    Analizar la recepción y resignificación de la cultura victoriana en la crítica y la producción cultural de los siglos XX y XXI.

    5.    Desarrollar habilidades de lectura crítica, interpretación textual y reflexión histórica en torno a los textos y contextos tratados.

    2.    To explore avant-garde movements within Victorian modernity, alongside key genres of popular fiction from the period.

    3.    To understand the cultural and aesthetic transformations of the fin de siècle in relation to the emergence of twentieth-century modernity.

    4.    To examine the reception and reinterpretation of Victorian culture in twentieth- and twenty-first-century criticism and cultural production.

    5.    To develop skills in critical reading, textual interpretation, and historical reflection concerning the texts and contexts studied.
