Belén Casas-Mas

 

 

 

Profesora Contratada Doctora en la UCM desde 2019 y Directora de Mediaciones Sociales, revista de Ciencias Sociales y de la Comunicación (UCM). Pertenece a los Grupos UCM de investigación “Identidades Sociales y Comunicación” y “Data Science and Soft Computing for Social Analysis and Decision Aid” y es investigadora en el Instituto Universitario de Estadística y Ciencia de Datos (IECD-UCM).

Belén Casas Mas holds a European PhD in Social Communication. She is Main Researcher, together with Prof. Ana Fernández Zubieta, of the R&D Project: 3PS-DECODE “Polarization, Populism, and Post-Truth in Digital Political Communication: Decoding Democracy Through Big Data Analysis" (Ref. PID2024-159550NB-I00. Duration: 2025-2028, Budget: 104.000 €, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities). She is member of the IECD (Institute of Statistics and Data Sciences, UCM) and Chief of Social Mediations, Journal of Social Sciences and Communication. Communication Chief of AISES (Asociación Iberoamericana de Sociología y Estudios Sociales) (2022-24). Since her beginnings as a FPU Professor, she has been teaching Communication Theory and Research Projects Methods at the UCM, at the Media & Communication Science, in the, where she has just been awarded as an Excellent Teacher (period 2018-2023). “Sexenio” (Six-year research period, 2013-2019). She has participated in various research projects funded by the Government of Spain such as “The social production of communication and social reproduction in the era of Globalization (CSO2010-22104-C03-01), on which her doctoral thesis is based on: Transformations of public communication in the era of globalization that influence consensus and social conflict, awarded with the Extraordinary PhD (2017). Since 2020 she has participated in the project “The Structure of Network Communication and Inclusive Public Opinion. A Study with Big Data Techniques and Social Network Analysis" with the UCM research group “Data Science and Soft Computing for Social Analytics and Decision Aid” of which she is a member. As a result of this project, she has published 16 scientific papers (4 JCR, two Q1, Q2, and Q3, 12 SCOPUS), 3 book chapters and delivered 12 international communications. Guest Editor of the Special Issue Rethinking and Analyzing Political Communication in the Digital Era, JCR journal Social Sciences. She is also a professor in the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) AI in Society, launched by Alianza Una Europa, whose objective is to mitigate the intrinsic risks in the design, implementation, and deployment of AI. She has recently participated in the International Seminar-Workshop: Populism, Polarization and Post-Truth in America, Latin, Europe and the United States at the Ricardo Palma University (Lima, 2023). Organizer of the RC33 (Logic and Methodology in Sociology -host committee-) oral session: “Big Data Analysis for Social Sciences” within the XX ISA World Congress, Melbourne, Australia, 2023. Guest Professor in the Course on International Human Rights Law organized in agreement by the “Ilustre Colegio de Abogados del Cusco” and  “Liga Peruana de Derechos Humanos”, 2022), where she tough the course: “Political polarization and hate speech on social networks”, for graduated judges and lawyers. In 2023, she completed an Erasmus Mobility Stay (STA) at the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences, (08/04/2023-08/14/2023). As a result of this stay, an International Network with Eastern European countries (e.g. Germany, Romania, Ukraine, Italy, Serbia, Poland, Bulgaria, Portugal, Turkie, etc.) and that will participate in the 3 P's Project. In addition, she has held the Symposium "Bots that increase incivility in the political debate on Twitter". Peruvian University of Applied Sciences (UPCS), Lima. She has coordinated the SIMPOSIO IIB. El problema global de las 3 P´s en los debates políticos digitales: Populismo, Polarización y Posverdad (UCM). Organizer of the invited session "Big Data and Social Network Analysis for the 3 P's Processes: Polarization, Populism and Post-Truth" at the 5th ISA Forum, Rabat, 2025. She is co-director with Prof. Robles, of the 3 P's International Network, a multidisciplinary group of researchers from 21 countries in the areas of social sciences, computing, statistics and mathematics and has organized the second Scientific Meeting (June, 2024) at the UCM that analyzes the advance of polarization, populism and post-truth on social networks. This scientific event has been socially disseminated in the event: “Science and Society. Three problems that affect the debates of the 21st century: Polarization, Populism and Post-truth in social networks” (Casa de Córdoba (Madrid, Spain). She collaborates with different media (e.g. El País, Cadena La Ser, BFM Business), and other institutions such as Grupo Cooperativo Cajamar to bring the results of their research closer to society.
