Over the past decade, new technologies and critical approaches have had a significant impact on scholarly and popular understandings of Spanish culture and literature from the late nineteenth century through the Spanish Civil War. Comparative methods, Cultural Studies, and the location and analysis of works, authors, periodicals, and literary collections are areas of research that have led to the expansion of the Silver Age canon into what has been called La Otra Edad de Plata or the Other Silver Age Spain. This transformation has been possible thanks to the mass digitization and online cataloging of historical and literary collections, which in turn have given rise to a nearly infinite archive, a continuum of delocalized data that is currently an object of study by several research groups in the international arena.

Towards the Digital History of the Other Silver Age Spain is the culminating project of one such group, La Otra Edad de Plata: Proyección Cultural y Legado Digital, which is also working to expand the Mnemosine Digital Library of the Other Silver Age Spain. The editors seek contributions in English (preferred) or Spanish from any scholar who wishes to reflect on the impact of digitization on evolving understandings of the culture and literature of Spain from approximately 1875 to 1939.
 
In the face of mass digitization, the volume’s central goal is to rethink traditional historiographic principles in order to demonstrate the possibilities of reconstructing and rereading the Other Silver Age Spain with digital resources. Drawing on archives and collections held in Spain and abroad, the volume aims to explore the production, storage, use, and dissemination of digital resources relevant to this period. It also seeks to offer theoretical and methodological reflections to facilitate continued research and teaching of the Spanish Silver Age within interdisciplinary and transnational contexts.
 
Contributions may consider but are not limited to the following topics:
 
·      theoretical approaches to Digital Literary History
·      methodologies for applying digital content to researching, curating, and teaching the culture and literature of the Other Silver Age Spain
·      studies of relevant archives, repositories, and libraries, both digital and analog
·      reflections on digital editions, data visualization, and other mechanisms for close and distant reading in the digital context
·      ethical considerations concerning questions of historical memory, canon creation, and marginalized genres and groups as pertaining to the digitization of the Other Silver Age Spain
·      the Digital History of cultural exchanges between Spain, the Americas, and/or other parts of the world
 
The editors tentatively envision grouping chapters around themes such as:
 
·      New Historiographies / New Digital Hispanisms
·      Making History / Building Digital Libraries, Collections, and Museums
·      Digital Texts and Contexts
 
The volume is under contract with Peter Lang and is projected to appear in the collection Hispanic Studies in the Global Context in 2022.
 
Potential contributors should send a title and abstract of approximately 300-400 words in English or Spanish to Dolores Romero López (dromero@filol.ucm.es) and Jeffrey Zamostny (jzamostn@westga.edu) by October 15, 2020. Initial acceptance decisions will be sent by November 1 and will be contingent upon approval of the complete chapter. Chapters in English (preferred) or Spanish of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 words will be due by May 15, 2021. The editors will oversee English-language translations of chapters submitted in Spanish.
 

En la última década, nuevas tecnologías y acercamientos críticos han tenido un impacto significativo sobre el conocimiento académico y divulgativo de la cultura y literatura españolas desde finales del siglo XIX hasta 1939. Los métodos comparativos, los Estudios Culturales y la localización y análisis de obras, autores, revistas y colecciones literarias considerados secundarios han constituido ámbitos de investigación que han supuesto la apertura del canon de la Edad de Plata a la llamada Otra Edad de Plata. Esta transformación ha sido posible gracias a la digitalización y catalogación masivas de fondos históricos y literarios, que han dado lugar a un archivum casi infinito, un continuum de datos deslocalizados que actualmente es objeto de estudio de varios grupos de investigación en el ámbito internacional.

Towards the Digital History of the Other Silver Age Spain es el proyecto culminante de uno de dichos grupos, La Otra Edad de Plata: Proyección Cultural y Legado Digital, que también está construyendo la Biblioteca Digital Mnemosine de La Otra Edad de Plata. Los editores invitan a presentar contribuciones en inglés (preferiblemente) o castellano de cualquier investigador/a que desee reflexionar sobre el impacto de la digitalización sobre la evolución de nuestro conocimiento sobre la cultura y la literatura de España entre aproximadamente 1875 y 1939.

Ante la digitalización masiva, el volumen tiene como principal objetivo replantear principios historiográficos tradicionales para demostrar las posibilidades de reconstrucción y relectura de La Otra Edad de Plata con recursos digitales. Partiendo de archivos y colecciones albergados en España y en el extranjero, el volumen busca explorar la producción, almacenamiento, uso y diseminación de recursos digitales relacionados con esta época. Asimismo, el libro propone ofrecer reflexiones teóricas y metodológicas para la investigación y docencia de la Edad de Plata española en contextos multidisciplinares y transnacionales.

Los capítulos pueden abordar los siguientes aspectos, no exhaustivos:

• aproximaciones teóricas a la Historia Digital de la Literatura
• metodologías para aplicar recursos digitales a la investigación, docencia y diseminación popular de la cultura y literatura de La Otra Edad de Plata
• estudios de archivos, repositorios y bibliotecas relevantes, tanto digitales como tradicionales
• reflexiones sobre ediciones digitales, visualización de datos y otros dispositivos para la lectura “cercana” y “distante” en el contexto digital
• consideraciones éticas sobre cuestiones de memoria histórica, creación de cánones culturales y géneros y autores marginados, en el contexto de la digitalización de La Otra Edad de Plata
• la Historia Digital de los intercambios culturales entre España, las Américas y/u otras partes del mundo

Los editores proponen agrupar los capítulos en torno a temas como:

• Nuevas Historiografías / Nuevos Hispanismos Digitales
• Hacer Historia / Construir Bibliotecas, Colecciones y Museos Digitales
• Textos y Contextos Digitales

Se ha firmado un contrato de publicación con Peter Lang (SPI: Q1) y se proyecta la aparición del volumen en la serie Estudios Hispánicos en el Contexto Global en 2022.

Los investigadores interesados en participar deben mandar título y resumen de su propuesta de aproximadamente 300 a 400 palabras en inglés o castellano a Dolores Romero López (dromero@filol.ucm.es) y a Jeffrey Zamostny (jzamostn@westga.edu) antes del 15 de octubre de 2020. Se mandará notificación sobre la admisión de la propuesta antes del 1 de noviembre, siendo provisional la aceptación hasta la aprobación del capítulo completo. El capítulo de aproximadamente 6.000 a 8.000 palabras en inglés (preferiblemente) o castellano se entregará antes del 15 de mayo de 2021. Los editores supervisarán la traducción al inglés de capítulos entregados en castellano.
