Educated at the University of Chicago (PhD 2002) and at the University of Salamanca (PhD 2008), Julio Vélez Sainz is Full Professor at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, director of the Instituto del Teatro de Madrid and co-director of the Seminar of Theatre Studies. He started his academic career as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2002-2008) before being selected as a "Ramón y Cajal" fellow at the Complutense. He has held invited visiting positions in Brown (Professor), Toulouse Le-Mirail (Professeur invitè), Georgia (Franklin Invited Associate Professor), and held visiting teaching posts in Ambato-Ecuador, Neuchâtel and Chicago (estancias Madariaga). He has authored works in Spanish, Portuguese and English about classical and contemporary authors. He has written 7 monographs, 8 critical editions, 13 coordinated books, more than 110 articles and chapters, over 20 reviews and 70 newspaper articles. He has led seven national and international R&D projects. His latest books include the edition of the theater of Miguel de Cervantes (Madrid, Verbum) and a monograph on the appropriation and relevance of Hispanic classical theatre (Kassel, Reichenberger). He currently serves as president of the Asociación Internacional de Teatro Español y Novohispano de los Siglos de los Oro (AITENSO) and representative of the UCM in the UNA Europa consortium in its section for Creative and Cultural Industries. He codirects La Pluma, a cultural journal devoted to creation and thought. He serves as director of several series, an example of which is Teatro y Artes escénicas in editorial Cátedra. His academic and creative performance work has premiered at the Festivals of Almagro (2019, 2022) and Alcalá (2021, 2022).

Ha sido “Ramón y Cajal” en la UCM y Assistant Professor en la University of Massachusetts Amherst (2002- 2008). Visitante en Brown (visiting professor), Toulouse Le-Mirail (Professeur invitè), Georgia (Franklin Invited Associate Professor), Ambato (Ecuador), Neuchâtel y Chicago (estancia Madariaga), publica en español e inglés sobre autores clásicos y contemporáneos. Ha escrito 7 monografías, 8 ediciones críticas, 13 libros coordinados, más de 110 artículos y capítulos de libros de investigación, una veintena de reseñas y unos 70 artículos de divulgación. Ha dirigido siete proyectos de I+D nacionales e internacionales. Sus últimos libros incluyen la edición del teatro de Miguel de Cervantes (Madrid, Verbum) y una monografía sobre la apropiación y vigencia de los clásicos teatrales hispánicos (Kassel, Reichenberger). Es actualmente presidente de la Asociación Internacional de Teatro Español y Novohispano de los Siglos de Oro (AITENSO) y representante de la UCM en el consorcio UNA Europa en su sección de industrias culturales y creativas. Codirige la revista cultural y de pensamiento, La Pluma (tercera época). Dirige varias colecciones y series de publicaciones como, por ejemplo, Teatro y Artes escénicas de la editorial Cátedra. Ha estrenado obras en los festivales de Almagro (2019, 2022) y Alcalá (2021, 2022).
