The Doctoral Programme in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling is an opportunity to develop an original research project using the most cutting-edge methods offered by quantum chemistry to explore scientific problems in chemistry, physics, materials science, nanoscience and biochemistry.

Computational modelling at the molecular level has established itself as a tool that cuts across many areas of knowledge, from biochemistry to new materials, including all disciplines of chemistry and emerging areas such as nanoscience. It also allows finding interpretations to complex problems using the most modern computational tools. An interuniversity Programme is offered, coordinated by the UAM, with the participation of different groups of excellence spread throughout the Spanish territory in 13 Spanish universities.

The UCM offers the PhD candidate the opportunity to train as an expert in this area. The doctoral thesis can be carried out either in the development of new methodologies or in their application to different problems. All doctoral candidates will receive as part of their training a broad vision of the possible applications of Theoretical Chemistry in different areas and the different existing modeling techniques.

Most of the students who have completed the Doctoral Programme in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling do at least one postdoctoral stay in academic centers. Many end up pursuing careers in academia, but a large number of students pursue careers in industry, typically in the pharmaceutical, materials, chemical or software development industries.

The Doctoral Programme provides students with state-of-the-art computing resources to develop their research projects. The research groups involved have access to large computational infrastructures, which ensure the realization of the project.
