Isabel Durán Giménez-Rico es Catedrática de Literatura Norteamericana en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), donde fue Decana de la Facultad de Filología entre 2022 y 2025. Anteriormente fue Vicerrectora de Relaciones Internacionales de la UCM (2015–2019), Presidenta de SAAS (Spanish Association for American Studies, 2015–2019), Directora del Departamento de Filología Inglesa II (2013–2015) y Vicedecana de Estudiantes de la Facultad de Filología (2006–2010). Fue asimismo coordinadora del área de Humanidades de los Cursos de Verano de El Escorial y miembro electo del General Council de la American Studies Association (ASA, 2008–2011), así como miembro de su International Committee.

Su investigación se centra en los estudios de autobiografía y life writing, género, literatura de mujeres, etnicidad, estudios transnacionales norteamericanos y, más recientemente, en las Humanidades Médicas y las narrativas de enfermedad. Es autora de más de ochenta artículos y capítulos de libro y ha coeditado ocho volúmenes sobre estudios de género, entre ellos Estudios de género: visiones transatlánticas (2016), además del volumen A Critical Gaze from the Old World: Transatlantic Perspectives on American Studies (2018). Tiene reconocidos seis sexenios de investigación y ha dirigido trece tesis doctorales.

Ha realizado estancias de investigación en la Universidad de Harvard, a través del Real Colegio Complutense (2012), y en la University of California, Santa Barbara (2019), y fue becaria Fulbright en 2000.

Actualmente es co-IP, junto con Francisco Cortés Vieco, del proyecto de investigación “Illness Narratives: Towards a Gendered Health(care) Awareness” (INGH) (2025–2028; PID2024-155270NB-I00), financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.

Isabel Durán Giménez-Rico is Professor of American Literature at Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), where she served as Dean of the Faculty of Philology from 2022 to 2025. She previously served as Vice-Rector for International Affairs at UCM (2015–2019), President of SAAS (Spanish Association for American Studies, 2015–2019), Head of the Department of English Studies II (2013–2015), and Vice-Dean for Students at the Faculty of Philology (2006–2010). She also coordinated the Humanities section of UCM’s El Escorial Summer Courses and was an elected member of the General Council of the American Studies Association (ASA, 2008–2011), as well as a member of its International Committee.

Her research focuses on autobiography and life writing, gender, women’s literature, ethnicity, transnational American studies, and, more recently, the Medical Humanities and illness narratives. She is the author of over eighty articles and book chapters and has co-edited eight volumes on gender studies, including Estudios de género: visiones transatlánticas (2016), as well as A Critical Gaze from the Old World: Transatlantic Perspectives on American Studies (2018). She has supervised thirteen doctoral dissertations and has been awarded six six-year research merit periods (sexenios de investigación).

She is Director of the Complutense Research Group “Gender Studies in the English-Speaking World” (Research Group No. 941381). She has been a visiting researcher at Harvard University through the Real Colegio Complutense (2012) and at the University of California, Santa Barbara (2019), and was a Fulbright Scholar in 2000.

She is currently Co-Principal Investigator, together with Francisco Cortés Vieco, of the research project “Illness Narratives: Towards a Gendered Health(care) Awareness” (INGH) (2025–2028; PID2024-155270NB-I00), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
