Philippines and the Pacific: From sea journeys to online journeys. Towards the creation of an e-learning tool

On June 16, 2016, the Seminar was granted the Innova-Docencia 2016/2017 Innovation Project, titled: "Filipinas y el Pacífico: de los viajes por mar a los viajes por la red. Hacia la construcción de una herramienta de aprendizaje en línea" (Philippines and the Pacific: From sea journeys to online journeys. Towards the creation of an e-learning tool).

In recent years, there has been a surge in demand for e-learning. This is why we aim to create a dynamic and user-friendly e-learning tool, to bring the knowledge about the Philippines and the Pacific region closer to every audience, academic and non-academic, thus promoting the dialog between science and society. Despite its relevance, this study area is still under-discussed in the current syllabuses of Spanish universities.

The current proposal tries to achieve several objectives, like the creation of a series of didactic materials and resources developed with educational purposes (PowerPoint presentations, collections of discussed documents and images, etc.). They would be free and available to everyone.

The project, which includes several researchers and students from two Faculties and three Departments of the Complutense University of Madrid, is adjusted to the main lines of the Innova-Docencia announcement. It would also help to delve into the historical bonds between Spain and the Asia-Pacific region, which, politically and economically speaking, is nowadays one of the most dynamic regions in the world.

Philippines and the Pacific. Design of a Massive Open Online Open Online Course (MOOC)

After several years of teaching experience, we have been able to see how society today increasingly demands access to quality training, with the Internet and MOOCs (offered by various national and foreign universities) being one of the ways to access it.

That is why among the objectives to be achieved with this Teaching Innovation Project (2017-2018 call) of the Complutense University of Madrid has been to design a massive, open and online training course (MOOC), which approaches in a dynamic and accessible way to the university and general public to the knowledge of the Philippines and the Pacific; thus facilitating a specialised academic approach to the study of the Philippines and the Pacific region.
