Mario Serrano-Losada is an assistant professor (‘profesor ayudante doctor’) at the Department of English Studies: Language and Literature at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). A graduate in English Philology and Spanish Philology (University of Salamanca), he holds an MA in Linguistics from the University of Barcelona and a PhD from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC, 2018). As a postgraduate student, he taught several English linguistics courses at Santiago de Compostela (2014-2017) and was a visiting fellow at KU Leuven and the University of Amsterdam. Before joining UCM, he held a postdoc position at USC, which enabled him to carry out research as a visiting scholar at the University of Edinburgh (2018-2019).

As a researcher, he is primarily interested in language variation and change, which he approaches from the standpoint of cognitive and usage-based linguistics. Amongst other things, he has been particularly vested in the study of the emergence and development of evidential and mirative constructions, both in English and Spanish. He is also a member of the USC research unit Variation, Linguistic Change and Grammaticalization (VLCG), led by Prof. Teresa Fanego. His work has been published in journals like English Language and Linguistics (CUP), the Review of Cognitive Linguistics (Benjamins) or the Journal of Historical Linguistics (Benjamins), and he is Section Editor for Historical Linguistics and Pragmatics for the peer-reviewed journal Open Linguistics (De Gruyter).
