Economic and Productive Areas

This area of research focuses on the energy market from the perspective of international political economy. The geopolitics of petroleum and gas in international relations can be structured into three levels of analysis: agents, regions and trade mechanisms. There exists no clearly defined structure within the energy market. The system is characterized by a series of asymmetrical relationships, unstable and difficult to govern, whose consequences are difficult to predict, though they do not necessarily yield traumatic results. Within this framework cooperation and negotiation are necessary to overcome tensions and potential conflicts that emerge from such an unstable structure.

The importance of energy in international relations highlights the salient role commodities play in global commerce and the fundamental impact they have as strategic products on the social and economic status of countries around the world.  Precisely for this reason, control over existing oil resources is one of the greatest advantages of global economic and political power, thus the roots of cooperation and conflict over oil hold a prominent place within international relations and impact the security policies of the most world´s most powerful nations. The study of international economic policy therefore provides adequate analytical resources used to understand the characteristics and outcomes of petroleum-based economic and political relations.
