The EG003-Zabala automatic weather station is installed on the roof of a concrete Refuge (Refugio Zabala of 4 meters high) at 2.057 m.a.s.l. There souroundings are granite formations near a glacier lagoon (Laguna grande de Peñalara). The subsurface measurements (boreholes and trenches) have been installed in a sedimentary area close to the Refuge, to carry out glaciers dating back from the geomorphological point of view and monitoring of micro-ecosystem of high mountain wetlands.
