Outreach: Master's degree in Meteorology and Geophysics UCM 2023

On may 25, 2023, GuMNet organized an outreach activity together with the coordination of the Master's degeree in Meteorology and Geophysics imparted by Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). The goal of this activity was to provide the students with a complementary and practical knowledge of how observational data are recorded for subsequent research activities.

In order to do so, EG010-Herrería station, located in La Herrería forest (El Escorial), was visited. There, the students were given some talks on the instrumentation of the tower and subsoil structure. Afterwards, the group moved to Santa María del Buen Aire campside to enjoy some complementary colloquiums that enhanced their knowledge on observational data applications, in terms of investigation and academic activities, about a complete view of GuMNet and some works that have made use of GuMNet. They had the chance to know about temperature and precipitation variability in the area, thermal subsoil diffusion or mountain breezes. We also had the chance to know more about El Bosque de la Herreria and the work done at the Centro de Estudios e Investigación para la Gestión de Riesgos Agrarios y Medioambientales (Ceigram), with whom GuMNet has collaborated in the past in the EIT Climate-KIC Summer School Journey they have organized in Madrid from 2018 to 2021. The excursion was topped off with a cultural visit to Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

We would like to thank every person who participated in the organization of this activity, especially to Manuel Terrón (Delegado en el Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial) and Roberto Martínez (Ingeniero de Montes del Departamento de Jardines y Montes), from Patrimonio Nacional, who made this activity possible and provided support for it, including the help of Vicente González (Director de las Escuelas Taller y Talleres de Empleo) and Francisco Javier Sanchez Rubio (Guarda Mayor).
