Outreach: Climate-KIC 2019

On July 2, 2019, as we did last year, GuMNet participated in an outreach activity within the Climate-KIC Summer School that the Centro de Estudios e Investigaciones para la Gestión de Riesgos Agrarios y Medioambientales (CEIGRAM-UPM) helps to organize in Spain. This school hosts young people from different European universities and institutions so that they learn about sustainable and innovative business in the context of climate change.

The main target pursued by the activity was that the Climate-KIC students could get familiar with how a meteorological monitoring network works and why collecting observational data is important. Moreover, they were told about some applications the data are used for, such as research on pastures, soil respiration and mountain breezes.

In order to do so, EG010-Herrería station, located in El Escorial, was visited. There, the students were given two talks in carbon dioxide flows measurements in subsoil and the instrumentation of the tower. Afterwards, the group moved to Santa María del Buen Aire campside to enjoy some complementary colloquiums that enhanced their knowledge on climate and sustainable entrepreneurship. The excursion was topped off with a cultural visit to the Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
