US-IALE Annual Meeting in Fort Collins, Colorado, from April 9-11

12 ABR 2019 - 01:15 CET

PhD Student Catarina Sequeira has attended to the US-IALE Annual Meeting in Fort Collins, Colorado, from April 9-11. The theme for the 2019 meeting was Conservation Innovation and Catarina presented a poster about "Understanding landscapes through historical fire scenarios and fire regimes in the Iberian Central Mountain System". The meeting raised important awareness on topics such as climate change and conservation within landscape ecology.
A field trip to the High Park fire 2012 (a recent high severity fire) and to the Ben Delatour Scout Ranch (a recently treated site with thinning and prescribed fire) was very interesting in order to discuss new research on forest regeneration and how they are using remote sensing to map surviving conifers to plan for post-fire recovery, and also to look at recent forest treatment that are diversifying forest structure, minimizing the risk of wildfire in critical watersheds, and contributing to a culture of fire on the Front Range.
Within this conference, Dr. Francisco Rego presented a very interesting textbook called "Applied Landscape Ecology", whose co-autors are Dr. Eva Strand, Dr. Stephen Bunting, and Dr. Paulo Godinho-Ferreira.
