About Us

Our group, CyPS-Catalysis and Unit Operations Group (ref. 910602), is located in the Chemical Engineering and the Materials Department, in the Chemistry School of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). It was founded in 2004, however the group comes from the “Laboratorio de Operaciones Básicas” (Unit Operations Laboratory) integrated in the Chemical Engineering Department since its foundation.

Besides his work in the field of research (described below), the CYPS group is directly involved in the teaching of various degrees in the Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Veterinary, and the Faculty of Biology in Complutense University of Madrid. Finally, the CYPS group cooperates with the local and international industry in basic research topics related to heterogeneous catalysis and separation operations, including both environmental science and technology and new materials development.

This group has extensive experience in the synthesis, preparation and modification of materials for use as adsorbents and / or catalysts, the study of various catalytic and non-catalytic reactions and the development of separation operations such as adsorption, distillation, etc. Specifically, the research group has extensive experience in the wastewater treatment which began in 1990 with the completion of several research projects of public and private funding primarily using adsorption and wet oxidation. Currently, the research team is integrated into a network of wastewater treatment, namely, "Red Madrileña de Tratamientos Avanzados de Aguas Residuales (REMTAVARES)" in Madrid Community and it was part of another national network in the Program Consolider -Ingenio 2010 through the project "Treatment and Reuso de Aguas Residuales para un Desarrollo Sostenible (TRAGUA)" which was evaluated by a committee of international experts appointed by the General Director of Scientific and Technical Research program as excellent.

The CyPS group collaborates with several research groups, both national and international related to water treatment research and other lines. In this regard include those made with the Institut de Recherches sur la Catalyse et l' environnement (Lyon, France), Laboratory of Catalysis and materials (Porto, Portugal), School of Chemistry and Chemical Engieering of Quens 's University (Belfast, Ireland), Chemical Engineering and Physical Chemistry Department of Extremadura University (Badajoz, Spain), Bioengineering Laboratory in the Faculty of Engineering (Concepción, Chile), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Bath University (England), Manchester University (England), Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (Bragança, Portugal), Universidade de Trás os Montes e Alto Douro (Vila Real, Portugal), etc.
