Javier Moreno-Rivero es doctor en Lingüística Aplicada por la Universidad de Cambridge (Reino Unido). Su tesis, financiada por una beca de la Fundación "la Caixa" obtuvo el Young Scholar Prize de la European Society for Translation Studies (2022–2025).

Actualmente es Profesor Distinguido Beatriz Galindo en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, donde desarrolla su labor docente e investigadora en el ámbito de la comunicación y las políticas lingüísticas en contextos institucionales y organismos internacionales. Su investigación se centra en las barreras de comunicación en democracias multilingües desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar que integra el derecho, la sociolingüística, la jurilingüística, las políticas públicas, los estudios de traducción y la sociología, estudiando la relación entre lengua, poder y acceso a derechos en sistemas multilingües.

Su trayectoria docente incluye universidades del Reino Unido y Estados Unidos: Heriot-Watt University, University of Sheffield, University of Cambridge, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) y City University of New York (CUNY). Desde 2017 ha dirigido más de cincuenta trabajos de posgrado (Máster y Doctorado) en lingüística aplicada y estudios de traducción en universidades de Reino Unido y España. En los últimos años ha publicado artículos, capítulos de libro y reseñas en publicaciones de referencia en lingüística, traducción y derecho, y es editor de la Elgar Encyclopaedia of Law and Language (Edward Elgar Publishing). Forma parte del comité editorial de revistas académicas internacionales como The International Journal for the Semiotics of Law, Estudios de Traducción y JUST. Journal of Language Rights & Minorities, entre otras, y participa en los órganos de gobierno de asociaciones como la American Translation & Interpreting Studies Association (ATISA), la Modern Language Association (MLA) y el Language Policy Special Interest Group de la British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL). Es asimismo Consultor Experto y Relator en multilingüismo en el Decenio Internacional de las Lenguas Indígenas para la UNESCO.

Ha recibido financiación para proyectos de investigación e innovación docente de la Mellon Foundation, el Gobierno del Estado de Nueva York, la Universidad de California, la Fundación "la Caixa" y el Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades de España. Ha sido ponente invitado en universidades como Princeton, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Georgetown, Université de Genève, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) y University of Warwick, y ponente plenario en conferencias celebradas en Canadá, Hong Kong y la India. Cuenta con un Máster en Traducción Institucional por la Universidad de Alicante (Matrícula de Honor), un Máster en Enseñanza de Español como Lengua Extranjera (Instituto Cervantes y Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo) y una Licenciatura en Traducción e Interpretación por la Universidad Pablo de Olavide de Sevilla.

Javier Moreno-Rivero holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). His doctoral thesis, funded by a fellowship from the “la Caixa” Foundation, was awarded the Young Scholar Prize of the European Society for Translation Studies (2022–2025). He is currently a Beatriz Galindo Distinguished Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, where his teaching and research focus on communication and language policy in institutional contexts and international organisations

His research examines communication barriers in multilingual democracies from an interdisciplinary perspective that brings together law, sociolinguistics, jurilinguistics, public policy, translation studies and sociology, exploring the relationship between language, power and access to rights in multilingual systems.

His teaching experience includes appointments at universities in the United Kingdom and the United States, including Heriot-Watt University, the University of Sheffield, the University of Cambridge, the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and the City University of New York (CUNY). Since 2017 he has supervised more than fifty postgraduate dissertations (Master’s and doctoral) in applied linguistics and translation studies at universities in the United Kingdom and Spain. In recent years he has published articles, book chapters and reviews in leading journals and volumes in linguistics, translation and law, and is editor of the Elgar Encyclopaedia of Law and Language (Edward Elgar Publishing). He serves on the editorial boards of international journals including The International Journal for the Semiotics of Law, Estudios de Traducción and JUST. Journal of Language Rights & Minorities, among others. He is also a member of the governing bodies of several academic associations, including the American Translation & Interpreting Studies Association (ATISA), the Modern Language Association (MLA) and the Language Policy Special Interest Group of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL). He also serves as Expert Consultant and Rapporteur on multilingualism for UNESCO’s International Decade of Indigenous Languages.

He has received funding for research and teaching innovation projects from the Mellon Foundation, the Government of the State of New York, the University of California, the “la Caixa” Foundation, and the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. He has been invited to give talks at universities including Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Georgetown University, the Université de Genève, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the University of Warwick, and has delivered keynote lectures at conferences in Canada, Hong Kong and India.

He holds an MA in Institutional Translation from the University of Alicante (with Honours), an MA in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language (Instituto Cervantes and Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo), and a BA in Translation and Interpreting from Pablo de Olavide University (Seville).
