Integral use of lignocellulosic biomass: biorefinery

Description of the line

Biorefinery seeks an integral, sustainable and efficient use of biomass. Currently, the biorefinery research line mainly uses woody lignocellulosic biomass to achieve a complete fractionation in its three main components: cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Recently, fruit stones have been incorporated into the fractionation study, taking eucalyptus wood as a reference and employing sustainable processes based on low-cost ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents (DEP). In this line, autohydrolysis pretreatments are performed to recover hemicelluloses in combination with organosolv and ionosolv processes. The treatments are performed at laboratory scale for optimization, being scaled up (x10) for techno-economic analysis. After the different treatments, a complete characterization of the fractionated materials is performed, showing special interest in lignin. Some of the most used analysis techniques are: HPLC, GPC, NMR, TGA, SEM, etc.
