CLARIAH-CM Node in the UCM Summer School at San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

The CLARIAH-CM node participated with great success in the UCM Summer School on 8, 9 and 10 July.

15 jul 2026 - 13:38 CET

“New Approaches to Global Communication in the Age of AI: Translation, Creativity and Specialised Languages”, was co-directed by Professors Elena Montiel Ponsoda and María de la Nava Maroto García. Marina Míguez Lamanuzzi (CLARIAH-CM Node) collaborated on the event as course secretary. Over the course of three days in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, there was an in-depth discussion on translation, terminology and creativity in an environment mediated by artificial intelligence.

Among the most noteworthy presentations that shaped this debate, Raquel Lázaro Gutiérrez, from the University of Alcalá, analysed the linguistic and cultural impact of new automated tools in her talk ‘AI in simultaneous interpreting – the great unknown’. Meanwhile, terminology management and accuracy in complex fields were the focus of the session ‘Term definition: a challenge for AI. The case of the health sciences’, delivered by Rosa Estopá Bagot from Pompeu Fabra University, who explained how to address communication needs in specialised medical discourse.

Iria da Cunha Fanego, from UNED, presented “AI-assisted plain language: challenges in specialised discourse in the public sector”, a paper focused on addressing the need for clarity and accessibility in government communication through technology. Finally, the limits of artistic creation were explored in the lecture by Julio Antonio Gonzalo Arroyo, a professor at UNED, entitled “Shakespeare, Coca-Cola and the Genie of the Lamp: on the literary creativity of Generative Artificial Intelligence”, in which the mechanisms of artificial creation were compared in detail with genuine human creativity.

The course has had a significant impact and has been featured twice on the University’s news website (News 1 and News 2). The course programme and the speakers’ presentations are also available on Zenodo here.
