Research Biography JRM

Javier carried out his PhD research in Prof. Ángeles García Pardo"s laboratory at Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas awarded with the prestigious Ramón Areces PhD Fellowship. There, Javier determined how cell adhesion through integrins regulates catalytic and non-catalytic functions of MMP-9 in B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia (BCLL). During this period, Javier also visited the group of Dr. Alison M. Michie at the University of Glasgow. In 2010 Javier was awarded with a JAE Postdoctoral Research and Juan de la Cierva Fellowship, to take up the position of research associate with Prof. A.C. Carrera (Spanish National Centre for Biotechnology). During this period, Javier determined how a catalytic isoform of PI3K localizes in the nucleus and controls DNA machinery and nuclear envelope integrity. Javier joined the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell-Matrix Research (University of Manchester) in January 2014 on a Wellcome Trust Enhancement Recruitment award, which allowed him to combine his expertise in leukemia and nuclear fields to investigate how epigenetic changes induced by cell-matrix interactions affect cell migration. In 2016, Javier was awarded with the prestigious John Goldman Fellowship (Leuka Foundation). In May 2017 Javier joined the School of Medicine of Complutense University, where he took a Ramón y Cajal position to establish his research group in Madrid. The major research goal of his lab is to understand how the interplay between cells and their surrounding environment coordinate epigenetic and nuclear changes that govern cell migraiton.
