Doing research in World Englishes: Approaches to data and methodology

This presentation explores methodological approaches to research in World Englishes, focusing on both qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection and analysis. On the qualitative side, I will discuss research on language attitudes toward the shifting linguistic dynamics of Gibraltar, drawing on three types of data: questionnaires, a self-compiled corpus of the local press (GibPress), and linguistic biographies. This work demonstrates how sociolinguistic insights can be generated through careful, context-sensitive qualitative analysis. On the quantitative side, I will present ongoing research in World Englishes that uses corpus-based data to examine morphosyntactic variables across English varieties worldwide. The session aims to highlight the complementarity of qualitative and quantitative methods in studying linguistic variation and change in global Englishes.
