Resumen

Este trabajo pretende reivindicar el papel desempeñado por las reinas castellanas desde finales del siglo XIV y a lo largo de la primera mitad del siglo XV en la fundación, ampliación y reforma religiosa del convento de Santa María la Real de Nieva. Las inscripciones, escudos y divisas conservados en la portada norte y en el interior del templo así como en el claustro no hacen sino exaltar la figura de las reinas como señoras y patronas de la villa y “monesterio” segovianos. En definitiva, Catalina de Lancaster y la hasta ahora ignorada María de Aragón habrían volcado todos sus esfuerzos en convertir el cenobio dominicano en un lugar digno del respaldo de la Corona.

Abstract

This paper aims to claim the role played by the Castilian queens since the end of the fourteenth century and throughout the first half of the fifteenth century in the foundation, enlargement and religious reform of the convent of Santa Maria la Real de Nieva. The inscriptions, coats of arms and badges preserved in the north portal and inside the church as well as in the cloister do nothing but exalt the queens as ladies and patrons of the Segovian village and “monesterio”. To sum up, Catherine of Lancaster and the so-far disregarded Mary of Aragon would have directed all their efforts to converting the Dominican convent in a place worthy of the support of the Crown.
