Other academic activities

Main external scientific collaborations:

Staffan Bensch (Lund University, Sweden). I work with Staffan in various projects on the ecology of host-parasite relationships. Concretely, I am a external collaborator of his project Transmission of avian malaria from tropical migrant birds to European resident birds (Swedish Research Council FORMAS, 2006-2008). Go to the website of the Molecular Population Biology Laboratory in Lund University.

Camille Bonneaud (Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University, EEUU) and John G. Ewen (Institute of Zoology, Zoological Society of London, UK). We are working on malaria parasites in endemic and introduced birds in New Zealand.

Sarah Collins (Marine Biology and Ecology Research Centre, School of Biological Sciences, University of Plymouth). We are collaborating with Sarah in a research line on song evolution in blackcaps.

Jesús T. García (Instituto de Investigación en Recursos Cinegéticos) and Francisco Suárez (Departamento de Ecología, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). I help them with various projects on conservation genetics of steppe birds.

Luisa Mendes and Jaime Ramos (Institute of Marine Research, University of Coimbra, Portugal). I work with them in a project on the ecology of avian malaria in wetlands, which includes co-supervising Rita Ventim's PhD thesis.

Teunis Piersma (Univ. Groningen/NIOZ, The Netherlands) and Allan J. Baker (University of Toronto, Canada). They coordinate the Global Flyway Network: a sentinel system for our longest-distance migrant birds, funded by BirdLife (Vogelbescherming) Netherlands. I participate in the program as an expert in relationships between parasites and migratory birds.

David S. Richardson (University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK). David and I are close collaborators in a research line on phenotypic variation and population genetics of birds in Atlantic archipelagos, with special reference to the evolution of parasite resistance. This connection has been recently reinforced with the stay of Álvaro Ramírez as a postdoc in the laboratory in Norwich.
