Conservation
Biology
ISIS - International Species Information System
ISIS
coordinates the activities of around 50% of zoo parks and aquariums
worldwide. Its database indicates the distribution of each animal species
and subspecies in each place. Such information helps to coordinate captivity
breeding programs, and therefore it is an excellent source of information
about ex situ conservation actions.
IUCN- The World Conservation Union
This
organization was founded in 1948 and nowadays includes some 10.000 experts
from 181 nations. Its mission is providing advice for nature conservation.
The IUCN produces the famous
red books of threatened species.
Society for Conservation Biology
Publishes a
leading journal in the area (Conservation Biology), and provides abundant
information about what is conservation biology, how should it be approached
from a scientific perspective, and what's the best way to teach it and learn
it.
World Conservation Monitoring Centre
Provides
information on conservation and sustainable use of Earth's life resources.
Its programmes are focused on preserving species, forests, protected areas,
marine and freshwater habitats, climate change, species trade, etc.

Evolutionary
biology
European
Society for Evolutionary Biology
Promotes the
scientific development and divulgation of evolutionary theory from Europe.
Organizes a biannual congress and publishes the Journal of Evolutionary
Biology.
Society of Systematic
Biologists
Provides
abundant information on phylogenetics and systematics, and publishes the
journal Systematic Biology.
Society for the Study
of Evolution
Promotes the
scientific development and divulgation of evolutionary theory from the USA.
It publishes the leading journal Evolution. Its website centralizes abundant information
about job offers, and links that have selected by renown experts.
Spanish
Society for Evolutionary Biology
Founded in 2003
to promote the scientific development and divulgation of evolutionary
theory in Spain. Publishes the electronic bulletin Evolución.
Tree of Life Web
Project
It is an
attempt to centralise as much knowledge as possible about the diversity of
organisms on Earth, their evolutionary history and characteristics, in a
single Internet site (with links to over 4.000 pages worldwide). A good
source of general information.
Provides many
more links to evolution pages (biodiversity, images,
teaching resources, databases, journals, search engines...).
Understanding Evolution
A great site
maintained by the Museum of Paleontology in the University of California at Berkeley.
Mainly with an educational orientation, it provides a simple but excellent
overview about what is evolution, how does it work, how is it studied (¡and
how is not!), how does it affect our lives, and how has it changed, as a
group of ideas, since it was first proposed centuries ago.

Ecology
British
Ecological Society
Promotes
ecological research from various perspectives, as shown by the different
focus of the journals it publishes (for example, Functional
Ecology, Journal of Animal Ecology or Journal of Applied
Ecology). Provides much information of general interest for ecologists.
Ecological Society of America
It publishes
some of the leading journals in the area (Ecology, Ecological Monographs or Ecological Applications),
and provides abundant information of interest for ecologists.
The Ecology WWW page
A search engine
that brings us to hundreds of other links to Internet sites related to every
field in ecology.

Job
opportunities and news
EvolDir - Evolution Directory
An email
list that circulates information about conferences, courses, job offers,
fellowships, etc., related to evolutionary biology. The distribution is very
agile and the contents are always pertinent. It can be customized to get
groups of messages that best suite our needs.
Highly recommended to anyone who wants to be updated in the field.
Earthworks-jobs.com
An Internet
site with useful information if you are looking for jobs as a biologist in
the area of Earth and environmental sciences.
You can also
look at job opportunities in our group, and
other job offers received at the
Faculty of Biology or
Complutense University.

Software
General software available at Complutense
University
The Informatics
Service at the UCM makes various software used for teaching and research
available to the staff of the University.
Statistical analysis
There are
various statistical packages available in the market. Some of them can be
used in the UCM, which has subscriptions to programs SAS (Statistical
Analysis System), SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) or
STATGRAPHICS, among others.
A useful site,
because of its educational interest, is the
electronic handbook
of the program STATISTICA.
For advanced users,
one of the best statistical tools, which is open code and therefore can be
downloaded from Internet, is the
R-project.
Molecular evolution and phylogenetics
Most of the
programs for molecular evolution analysis and estimation of molecular
phylogenies have been developed by the users, and are free to download
from the Internet. As a consequence of the rapid growth of this research
area, there are lots of programs already available. Arguably, one of the best selections of software,
which we propose here because of its educational purpose, was made by the teachers of the
Workshop on Molecular
Evolution, at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA,
USA.
R-phylo.org
The National
Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) has launched www.r-phylo.org, a
community resource for people interested in using and developing
phylogenetic comparative methods in R. The wiki currently contains
information on analyses and packages available in R and provides step-by-step
tutorials for those just getting started.
We will add more
links related to other topics shortly.

Other
European
Science Foundation
They fund
research programs in all fields of science, to promote collaboration between
institutions from different EU countries.
Spanish
Ornithological Society
Founded
in 1954, it is devoted to the study and conservation of birds and their
habitats. Publishes the journal Ardeola, one of the main sources of
information about the biology of Iberian birds.
Black stork
monitoring
One of our
collaborators,
Luis Santiago Cano, is participating in various projects for the
conservation of black stork populations, which have produced several
Internet sites that illustrate the usefulness of the net for making
Conservation Biology programs popular. Among these, the project
Flying over Natura
2000 outstands because of its interest in divulgation.
