My research interests are in evolutionary biology, biogeography and ecology, using birds and other terrestrial vertebrates as model organisms. I am interested in identifying distribution patterns and elucidating the forces that shape the distribution of diversity, from local to regional scales, and their evolutionary and ecological consequences. My recent research has focused on the phylogeography, colonisation history, and morphological and song diversification of forest birds in the Canary Islands and Madeira. I have also investigated questions related to biogeography of Spanish avifauna, avian migration, bird wintering and dynamics of marginal populations. I use a broad set of approaches (ringing data, community surveys, atlas databases, molecular tools) and seek to maintain an applied perspective, addressing conservation issues such as the identification of priority areas for biodiverstiy, reserve selection procedures, and environmental impact assessment.
