The cannabinoid system as a therapeutic target in neurological disorders (Satellite meeting of the 8th FENS Forum)

July 13, 2012 (Barcelona, Spain)

The research on cannabinoid compounds and, in particular, the study of their mechanisms of action in the CNS allowed the identification and characterization of a novel neuromodulatory system, the endocannabinoid system, that works in the retrograde signalling at many CNS synapses. These discoveries provided a strong support for the development of numerous studies, presently moving from the preclinical area to the clinical level, aimed at evaluating the potential of this signalling system for the treatment of various CNS disorders, as well as at identifying the different targets within this system that are susceptible of pharmacological management. The purpose of this satellite symposium will be to update those hot aspects related to the therapeutic potential of the cannabinoid system in CNS disorders, with a first general part addressed to review the most important advances in relation with the chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry and physiology of the cannabinoid system in the CNS, and a second part that will focus on the potential of cannabinoid compounds for the treatment of most important CNS disorders, including neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders, pain, brain tumours, feeding disorders, addiction, and psychiatric diseases.
