Bacterial colonisation and infection
The mains interest of the group's research activities, which started in 1987, have been the study of the pathogenicity of Salmonella infection. However, other research lines have arisen from collaborations with Hospitals, with the University of San Pablo-CEU, and especially with the Department of Nutrition of this Faculty (Isabel Goñi, Researcher). These lines included antibiotic resistance in Salmonella, dynamics of the colonisation of cystic fibrosis patients by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and effects of the diet on the intestinal microbiota. The group has also participated in the SAFFIC European project, aimed to the proposal of new quality standards for saffron.
The collaboration with the research group directed by Professor María Molina has been very successful in the characterisation of Salmonella effectors by using the yeast cell model. Currently, we have also started the characterisation of Burkholderia cenocepacia virulence factors; this opportunistic pathogen is responsible for an awfully severe syndrome in cystic fibrosis patients.
