Presentation
The Department of Microbiología II, adscribed to the Faculty of Pharmacy of the UCM, is rooted in the earliest Chair of Microbiology to be founded in the history of Spanish Universities, created in the year 1900. The first Chair was Professor Francisco de Castro y Pascual.
Later, the Chair was held by Prof. Lorenzo Vilas and Prof. Eliseo Gastón de Iriarte, whose successor was Prof. César Nombela Cano from 1980. The Department is currently directed by Prof. Concha Gil García.
Today the Department comprises a total of 46 academic scholars and researchers, including 5 full professors, as well as 15 postdoctoral researchers and 15 predoctoral students. The administrative tasks are supported by 2 secretaries and 3 laboratory technicians.
In addition, the Departament temporarily hosts Lecturers and Researchers form other countries, as well as Socrates and Erasmus foreign students or Spanish students enjoying collaboration fellowships
Activities
Our Department participates in teaching activities in the Degrees on Pharmacy, Food Science and Technology and Optics and Optometrics, and at the Postgraduate level in our own Doctorate program, as well as in diverse Master Degrees, UCM Postgraduate Titles and Specialized Courses.
Research is organized in 8 Research Groups, some of them in collaboration with other Departments, Centers or Institutions. Our projects are financed by public European, National, local (Comunidad de Madrid) agencies or by private initiatives. Our Annual Research Record can be downloaded (in Spanish).
We often organize national or international Scientific Congresses, Workshops, Meetings and Seminars. Our Department has participated in the creation of UCM Centers for the Support of Research, such as the Flow Cytometry and Confocal Microscopy, Genomics and Proteomics Units.
