nazario

Nazario Martín is a graduate of the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM), where he obtained the PhD in 1984. He worked as postdoctoral fellow (1987–1988) with Michael Hanack on electrically conducting organic materials at the Institut für Organische Chemie der Universität Tübingen. In 1994, he was a visiting Professor at the Institute for Polymers and Organic Solids (IPOS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) working with Fred Wudl on fullerenes. He is currently full professor of Organic Chemistry at the UCM. Professor Martín's research interests span a range of targets with emphasis on the chemistry of carbon nanostructures such as fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, p-conjugated systems as molecular wires, and electroactive molecules, namely tetrathiafulvalenes (TTFs), in the context of electron transfer processes, photovoltaic applications and nanoscience. Professor Martín has been visiting professor at UCLA (USA) and Angers (France) universities. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of Chemical Communications, and he has served as General Editor of the Spanish journal Anales de Química (2000-2005) and as a member of the international editorial advisory board of The Journal of Materials Chemistry. He is the Regional Editor for Europe of the journal Fullerenes, Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures. He is a member of the Real Academia de Doctores de España. He is a fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry, and currently he is the President of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry.

Beatriz M. Illescas obtained her degree in Chemistry at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, in 1992. She joined the group of Profs. Carlos Seoane and Nazario Martín, where she obtained her Ph.D in Organic Chemistry in February 1998, working on the study of cycloaddition reactions to C60 and their application to the synthesis of electroactive fullerenes. During 1998 she worked as postdoctoral researcher on the synthesis of fullerene derivatives with potential pharmacological activity, in a project with Janssen-Cilag S.A. From 1999-2009 she worked as an Assistant Professor at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. From 2009, she holds an Associate Professor position at the Department of Organic Chemistry of UCM University. Her current interests focus on the covalent and supramolecular chemistry of fullerenes and TTFs.

Mª Ángeles Herranz obtained her Ph.D. in 2001 from the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM) under the supervision of Profs. Nazario Martín and Carlos Seoane, working on the synthesis and properties of donor-acceptor systems based on [60]fullerene and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF). Starting in 2001, she spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Luis Echegoyen, first at the University of Miami (Florida, USA) and then at Clemson University (South Carolina, USA), where she was engaged in a number of projects, including electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical characterization of new TTF-based dyads, and characterization of fullerene-derived materials employing electrochemical, ESR, and NMR techniques. In 2004 she joined the group of Prof. Nazario Martín at UCM, at first holding a Ramón y Cajal research associate position and, since 2007 as an Assistant Professor. She became an Associate Professor of Chemistry in 2009. Her current research interests focus on the chemistry and electronic properties of carbon nanostructures and in single-molecule electronics.

Ángel Martín Domenech was born in Madrid, Spain. He graduated in Chemistry at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM-1986). In the same year he obtained the Master in Organic Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. J. Plumet working on the chemistry of N-acyl-b-lactams. Afterwards, he worked seven months in Milano (Italia) in the Research and Development Department of the Multinational Suisse Company (SICPA, S.A.). He returned to the UCM and received his Ph. D. under the supervision of Prof. J. Plumet and Prof. O. Arjona. Following one year postdoctoral stay with Professor María J. Camarasa (Instituto de Química Médica del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) working on the search for effective drugs for AIDS therapy, particularly focussed on the viral enzyme reverse transcriptase (RT) that has a critical role in the life cycle of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), he joined Professor N. Martín´s group at UCM. From 2010, he holds an Associate Professor position at the Department of Organic Chemistry of UCM University. His current research interest focuses on the reactivity of fullerenes with transition metal, and the application of the new derivatives in materials science.

Emilio M. Pérez was born in Palencia (Spain) in 1977. He obtained his BSc (2000) and MSc (2001) from the Universidad de Salamanca, working in the design and synthesis of enantioselective receptors for a-aminoacids under the supervision of Prof. Joaquín R. Morán. He then moved on to the University of Edinburgh (UK) to join the group of Prof. David A. Leigh. He obtained his PhD in 2005 with the thesis entitled “Hydrogen-bonded Synthetic Molecular Machines”, which was recognized with the 1st prize by the Society of Chemical Industry and the 2006 IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists. He joined the group of Prof. Nazario Martin at Universidad Complutense de Madrid in May 2005 enjoying a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral contract. From November 2008 he is part of the IMDEA Nanoscience as a Ramón y Cajal researcher. In 2009 he received the RSEQ prize for Novel Researchers. His main research interests concern the self-assembly of functional materials and the construction of molecular machinery.

Salvatore Filippone was born in Reggio Calabria and grew up in his beloved Locri (Kingdom of the Two Sicilies). He did his universitary studies abroad, at the University of Pavia where he also obtained his PhD. The thesis was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Faita on metal catalyzed asymmetric synthesis. In April 2000, he moved to Ecole Normale Superieure of Paris for a postdoctoral fellowship on the biological evaluation of fullerene derivatives, working with Prof. Rassat and Prof. Bensasson. This project involved the synthesis of water soluble methanofullerenes covalently linked to beta and gamma cyclodextrins and the study of their photophysical properties. Since April 2002, he has joined the Nazario Martín group, working mainly on new reactivity in the fullerene chemistry, molecular wires and organic photovoltaics. Currently, he is a “Ramón y Cajal” researcher.

Juan Luis Delgado obtained his BSc (2000) and his PhD (2004) from the Universidad de Castilla-la Mancha. Afterwards he joined the group of Dr. Jean-François Nierengarten, initially at the Université Louis Pasteur-ECPM-CNRS (Strasbourg, France) and later on at the Laboratoire de Chimie de Coordination (CNRS, Toulouse, France), where he worked as a postdoctoral fellow (2005-2006). He then joined the group of Nazario Martín in December 2006 as a “Juan de la Cierva” postdoctoral fellow. Currently he holds a “Ramón y Cajal” post-doctoral research contract at IMDEA-NANOCIENCIA, where he is mainly focused on the synthesis and design of new carbon-based energy storing materials for the development of more efficient organic photovoltaic devices. Carmen Mª Atienza Castellanos was born in Alcázar de San Juan (Spain) in 1976. She obtained his BSc (1999) and DEA (2001) from the University of Autónoma of Madrid, working in the formation of benzo[b]fluorenes and the benzo[a]fluorene core of the fluostatins by cyclization of diaryldiynones under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Antonio M. Echavarren. Then she moved on to the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM) where she obtained her Ph.D. in 2005 with the thesis entitled “Synthesis photo- and electroactive systems based on [60]fullerene and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)” under the supervision of Profs Nazario Martín and Carlos Seoane, working. During this period, she spent three months at the ETH Zurich joining the group of Prof. Dr. François Diederich and working on the synthesis of new TTF acetylenic-CEEs system for NLO. From 2005 to 2006 she worked as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Dirk M. Guldi at Lehrstuhl für Physikalische Chemie I in Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg on photophysics study of electron transfer in electroactive organic systems. Until 2007 she joined the group of Prof. E. Díez Barra working on synthesis of dendrimeric structure for nanophotonic application worked at University of Castilla La Mancha. In October 2007 she enjoyed as a visiting professor contract at UCM. From Octuber 2009, she currently enjoy a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral contract.

Laura Rodríguez Pérez was born in Oviedo (Spain) in 1981. In 2004 she received an Erasmus grant and spent a school year in the Ecole Européene de Chimie Polymères et Matériaux-Université Louis Pasteur and she was graduated in 2005 from the Universidad de Oviedo. Afterwards she spent 9 months at the Institute Français du Petrole, IFP (Lyon, France) to work in the preparation and characterization of monoliths for the electrochemical promotion of catalysis. Then, she moved on to theEcole Nationale Supérieure des Ingénieurs en Arts Chimiques Et Technologiques (ENSIACET-Toulouse, France) to joint the groups of Prof. Philippe Serp in the Laboratoire de chimie de coordination (LCC) and of Prof. Montserrat Gomez in the Laboratoire de heterochimie fundamental et appliqué (HFA). She obtained her PhD in 2009 with the thesis entitled “New catalytic systems based on carbon nanotubes supported ionic liquid phase”. After this period she spent one month at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (Mexico D.F.) in the group of Prof. Erika Martin Arrieta to work on tandem reactions catalyzed by metallic nanoparticles stabilized in ionic liquids. She joined the group of the Prof. Nazario Martin at Universidad Complutense de Madrid in mars 2010 as a postdoctoral researcher.

Fulvio G. Brunetti received his “Laurea” in Chemistry from the University of Bari (Italy) in 2004 under the supervision of Professor G. Farinola. In 2008 he obtained his PhD in Pharmaceutical Science under the direction of Professor M. Prato at the University of Trieste, working on carbon nanostructure He then moved to the University of California, Santa Barbara as postdoctoral fellow with Professor F. Wudl, studying electron-accepting systems for bulk heterojunction solar cells. Recently, he has joined the IMDEA Institute as a Juan de la Cierva researcher under the supervision of Professor N. Martin. His interest is focused on the synthesis of new materials for organic photovoltaics.

Juan Marco Martínez was born in Madrid in 1983, Spain. He obtained his degree in Chemistry in 2005 at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He started his research in Organic Chemistry at the same University under the supervision of Prof. Diego J. Cárdenas and Dr. Elena Buñuel, working in the development of new interesting Pd-catalyzed reactions and their application in organic synthesis: carboborations of polyunsaturated compounds. During this period he spent three months in the research group of Prof. Ben L. Feringa at the Rijksuniversiteit of Groningen, The Netherlands, working in the synthesis of new molecular motors. In March of 2010, he obtained his PhD at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid with the Thesis entitled: “Pd-Catalyzed Borylative Cyclization Reactions of Polyunsaturated Compounds: Synthesis of Alkyl- and Allylboronates”. At the beginning of 2011, he joined Nazario Martín’s Group as a Postdoctoral Researcher and is currently interested about asymmetric synthesis of fullerene derivatives.

Damien Joly was graduated in 2007 from the University of Rennes where he also obtained his PhD in 2010 under the supervision of Pr M. Hissler and Pr R. Réau on the developpment of organophosphorus conjugated systems for organic electronic. Then he joined the group of Pr. Nazario Martin at UCM in 2008 as IMDEA post-doc. His current research interests are the synthesis of porphyrine and C[60]fullerene based materials for photosynthetic purpose and also donor materials for photovoltaic application.

Enrique E. Maroto was born in 1984 in Madrid, Spain. He obtained his degree in Chemistry in 2007 at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 2006 he spent six months working on Fullerene Chemistry in J. C. Hummelen´s group in the Rijksuniversiteit in Groningen, the Netherlands. In October 2007 he joined Nazario Martin´s group and started his PhD studies about chemical reactivity of carbon nanostructures. He received his Master Degree of Organic Chemistry in October 2008 and he is currently researching about asymmetric synthesis of fullerene derivatives.

Raúl García Sanz was born in Madrid (Spain) in 1984. He obtained his degree in Chemistry in 2007 at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, and in the same year he won the “Year of the Chemistry Special Award” in the Arquímedes Contest of Introduction to Scientific Research of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. Starting his Ph.D in 2008 under the supervision of Prof. Mª Ángeles Herranz and Prof. Nazario Martín, he is currently researching about the chemistry of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes and the study of their electronic properties for applications in materials science.

Andrea

Andrea La Rosa was born in Cinquefrondi (Reggio Calabria, Italy) on 24/01/1983. He obtained his MSc in March 2007 in University of Pavia working on molecular recognition of G-duplex and G-quadruplex in DNA under the supervision of Prof. Mauro Freccero . Afterwards he obtained a grant in the same research group working about two different projects of heterocycles synthesis. From February 2008 to November 2008, he worked in stage in Glaxo Smith Kline (Verona,Italy). Currently, he joined to Nazario Martin’s Group and he started his research at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid with an IMDEA Nanociencia studentship. From the 1th of January 2009 to 30 June 2009 he started his own PhD taking part in a project called “FOTOMOL”. It consisted in synthesis of new molecular photovoltaics devices based on the use of fullerene C60 differently modified. Afterwards, his research interest has been moved to the “molecular electronics” due to a new project financed by UE – Marie Curie Actions called “FUNMOLs” as Fundamental of Molecular Electronic Assemblies. María Gallego Capdevila was born in Madrid, Spain. She obtained her degree in Chemistry in 2009 at Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The same year, she joined Nazario Martín´s group and started her research in Organic Chemistry with an IMDEA Nanociencia studentship. In 2010 she started her Ph. Jaime Mateos Gil was born in 1987 in Talavera de la Reina, Spain. He started his research work at GSOLFA (Chemical Optosensors & Applied Photochemistry group) at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 2009 he carried out the final research project to obtain the Chemistry degree in the Supramolecular Organic and Stereoselective Chemistry Group at the same university, under the supervision of Prof. Santiago de la Moya, in the design, evaluation and synthesis of chiral ligands for enantioselective addition of alkylzinc derivatives. He obtained his degree in Chemistry in 2010 at Universidad Complutense of Madrid. In September 2010 he joined the group of Prof. Nazario Martin where he is currently researching about carbon nanotubes reactivity.

Luis Moreira Navarro was born in 1986 in Madrid, Spain. In 2008 he spent four months working in the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research in Basel, Switzerland. In 2009 he obtained a double degree in Chemistry from the Autonomous University of Madrid and the European Engineering School of Chemistry, Polymers and Material Science of Strasbourg. He is currently doing a joint PhD under the supervision of Dr. Jean-François Nierengarten (University of Strasboug) and Pr. Nazario Martín on the Hierarchical Organization of Supramolecular Materials for C60-Based Photoactive Devices.

Prof. Dr. Mª. Margarita Suárez Navarro is a Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Havana University, Cuba. She has developed her own research on the synthesis and transformation of heterocycles with potential bioactive properties, reporting on new protocols using non-conventional synthetic procedures such as microwave, ultrasound and solid phase synthesis as a contribution to the Combinatorial Chemistry and Green Chemistry, performing structural and conformational study of the compounds synthesized by NMR and X-ray techniques and the application of theoretical calculations. Her interests also include the chemistry of fullerenes with special emphasis on the preparation of fullerene derivatives by means of cycloaddition reactions, and investigations on the chemical reactivity of carbon nanostructures. Since 1990 she has established scientific contacts with Prof. Dr. Nazario Martín, creating a fruitful collaboration that has resulted in near 50 research papers in international journals.

Luis Sánchez is Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM), Spain. He received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University Complutense of Madrid in 1997, where he carried out the synthesis and studied the properties of C60–donor dyads and triads. From 1999 to 2000 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher with Professor Jan C. (Kees) Hummelen (University of Groningen, The Netherlands) on the synthesis of supramolecular architectures based on C60 and their application in the preparation of organic solar cells. In 2002, he was appointed as an associate professor at UCM. Margarita Altable was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1977. She obtained her degree in Chemistry (Licenciatura en Ciencias Químicas) at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2003. María Sierra was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1979. She studied Chemistry at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). Gustavo Fernández is currently a last-year Ph.D. student of Organic Chemistry at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Spain. He received his BsC at UCM in 2004. In December of 2004 he joined Nazario Martin´s Group and started working on the synthesis of supramolecular architectures based on C60 and their application in the preparation of organic solar cells. In June of 2006 he received his Master Degree of Organic Chemistry. Recently he was awarded the EuCheMS prize at PhD level and the Lilly prize. His current research interests are focused on new supramolecular C60-based ensembles especially in the study of electron transfer processes and photovoltaic applications.

Pierre-Antoine Bouit was born in Ardèche (France) in 1982. In 2004 he spent 5 months at Physicians Formula® (Pasadena, California) as R&D assistant to work on the formulation of cosmetics products. He was graduated in 2005 from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Paris (ENSCP, France), a school of chemical science and engineering. He obtained a PhD in 2008 at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS-Lyon, France) under the supervision of Dr O. Maury and Dr C. Andraud on the synthesis of near infrared absorbing dyes for nonlinear optics. During this period he spent 3 months at KTH (Stockholm, Sweden) in the group of Pr. E. Malmström to work on dendronnized chromophores. Then he joined the group of Pr. Nazario Martin at UCM in 2008 as IMDEA post-doc. His current research interests are the synthesis of exTTF and [60]fullerene based materials for the preparation of Photovoltaic devices (Bulk HeteroJunctions and Dyes Sentized Solar Cells).

José M. Santos Barahona was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1979. He obtained his degree in Chemistry in 2005 at Complutense University of Madrid. Starting his Ph.D in 2005 under supervision of Prof. Nazario Martín León and Prof. Beatriz Illescas, he is currently researching about electroactive systems based on C60 and extended-TTF units, acting as electron acceptor and donor respectively.

David Canevet was born in Angers (France) in 1984. He obtained his Master Degree from the University of Angers in Molecular Engineering and Nanotechnologies in 2006 working on tetrathiafulvalene-perylene diimide dyads. Then, under the supervision of Professor Marc Sallé, he started a PhD dealing with multifunctional gelators for the preparation of conducting materials but also, with responsive TTF-fluorophore associations aiming at preparing molecular logic gates. Since March 2010, he is working on macrocyclic fullerene receptors in Professor Nazario Martin’s group in Madrid. His research interests mainly concern organogels, donor-acceptor associations and, more generally, supramolecular chemistry.

Agustín Molina Ontoria was born in 1981 in Madrid, Spain. He obtained his degree in Chemistry in 2006 at Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. He started his research in Inorganic Chemistry at the same University, under supervision of Dr. Salomé Delgado Gil. In 2006 he started his PhD studies at the Nazario Martin group in the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. He is currently researching about charge transfer processes in covalently linked [60]fullerene and ex-TTF systems by molecular wires as the spacers.

Marta Izquierdo Barroso was born in Madrid, Spain. She obtained her degree in Chemistry in 2007 at Universidad Complutense of Madrid. She started her research in Organic Chemistry at the same University with a IMDEA Nanociencia student ship. In 2007 she started her Ph.D studies at the Nazario Martin group in the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. She is currently researching about solar cells and reactivity of fullerenes.

Braulio Insuasty Obando obtained his degree in BA Chemistry and Biology at the University of Nariño in 1978, the title of Ph.D. in Chemistry was awarded at the State University of Kharkov, Ukraine, under the direction of Dr. V. D. Orlov, further he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Materials, University Complutense of Madrid, Spain. He has published several international articles in the field of Heterocyclic Compounds and Molecular photo and electroactive materials. He has directed several dissertations, Masters and Undergraduate. He is Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Valle and director of the Research Group of Heterocyclic Compounds

Alejandro

Alejandro Ortiz was born in Cali, Colombia. He obtained his degree in Technology Chemistry at the Universidad del Valle in 2000 and degree in Chemistry in 2003 (cum laude). In January 2002 he joined the research group named “Grupo de Investigación de Compuestos Heterocíclicos” under the supervision of prof. Braulio Insuasty O. He obtained his Ph.D (cum laude) in 2008 under supervision of Prof. Braulio Insuasty. His current research interests are the synthesis and study of new systems electroactives and molecular wires. He works as a professor in the Universidad del Valle (Colombia) since 2008.

Angélica García was born in Santiago de Cali, Colombia. She obtained her degree in Chemistry at the Universidad del Valle-Colombia in 2003. She obtained her Ph.D in 2010 under the supervision of Professor Dr. Braulio Insuasty Obando on the Grupo de Investigación de Compuestos Heterocíclicos of the Universidad del Valle. During his doctoral internship in 2007 she established scientific contacts with Prof. Dr. Nazario Martín; she is working on developing building blocks for C3 symmetry molecules: s-Triazine-based redox active chromophores.
