Founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros, the Complutense University today has almost 6,000 professors and is one of the most complete educational institutions in Europe. The University has a sweeping range of specialties divided into four areas: Humanities; Hard Science and Nature; Health Science, and Social Science.
There are twenty one Faculties and five University Colleges, with 87,000 students in its two campuses, located in Ciudad Universitaria (Moncloa) and Somosaguas, based over an expanse of more than 360 hectares.
Located fifty kilometres from Madrid, the town came to being under the shadow of the majestic San Lorenzo de El Escorial Monastery. King Felipe II ordered the construction of the Monastery in 1561 to commemorate his victory in the Battle of San Quintin, fought on the day of Saint Lorenzo.
The town is situated at the foot of Mount Abantos, part of the Guadarrama mountain range, explaining its agreeable climate during the summer months. Given its important cultural interest, it is one of the main centres for tourism and one of the most famous sites Madrid has to offer. An excellent train system and bus service connect the town centre to Madrid.
