II. Calocedro decurrentis-Pinetea jeffreyi classis nova hoc loco
Conifer and mixed conifer and evergreen or decidous broad leaved micro to megaforests from the Californian biogeographical region. These forests represent the natural potential vegetation, mostly climatophilous, growing in all kinds of bedrock soils, in supra and oromediterranean pluviseasonal oceanic dry to hyperhumid bioclimate. In the hyperoceanic and humid-hyperhumid areas of the North Californian biogeographical province also grow in the upper mesomediterranean belt. Two orders with ombric and edaphic opposite requirements stand out: a) Arctostaphylo patulae-Pinetalia jeffreyi, with ombric or edaphic xeric character, b) Abietetalia magnifico-lowianae, more mesic and ombrophilic. Bioclimatical diagnosis: Ic 5-22, Itc < 250, Tp 400-1700, Io > 2.0. Typus nominis: Junipero australis-Pinetalia jeffreyi ordo novus hoc loco. Characteristic species: Amelanchier pumila, Apocynum androsaemifolium subsp. pumilum, Arceuthobium abietinum, Arceuthobium campylopodum, Arctostaphylos nevadensis, Bromus suksdorfii, Calocedrus decurrens, Carex brainerdii, Ceanothus prostratus, Corallorhiza maculata, Frangula californica, Hieracium albiflorum, Leptodactylon pungens, Lonicera hispidula var. vacillans, Lonicera interrupta, Monardella macrantha, Phacelia mutabilis, Penstemon gracilentus, Pinus lambertiana, Phoradendron bolleanum subsp. pauciflorum, Phoradendron juniperinum subsp. libocedri, Prunus subcordata, Pseudostellaria jamesiana, Pyrola picta, Quercus chrysolepis (t), Ribes nevadense, Rosa bridgesii, Sarcodes sanguinea, Silene lemmonii, Stipa californica, Stipa lemmonii, Symphoricarpos mollis, Torreya californica, Whipplea modesta.
IIa. Arctostaphylo patulae-Pinetalia jeffreyi ordo novus hoc loco Open conifer forests, generally with a close shrubby understory which produce an thick organic matter or tangel that deep becomes slowly to humus mull. These climatophilous or edaphoxerophilous forests grow on all types of substratums on supra-oromediterranean, euoceanic-semicontinental, dry to hyperhumid bioclimates. We recognize two alliances: 1. Arctostaphylo patulae-Pinion jeffreyi: climatophilous or topographic edaphoxerophilous, on semicontinental, supra-oromediterranean infra dry to subhumid bioclimates. This alliance has their main representation in leeward slopes of the Sierra Nevada-Transcascadian biogeographical sector territories as well as in certain xeric areas of South Californian Ranges sector. 2. Querco vaccinifoliae-Pinion jeffreyi, ultramafic edaphoxerophilous, typical on serpentinic soils, sparse in Klamath-Ciscascadian, Sierra Nevada-Transcascadian and North Californian Coastal sectors in subhumid to hyperhumid ombroclimate areas, mostly in the climax territories of the alliances: Querco kelloggii-Abietion lowianae, Abietion magnificae and Arbuto-Lithocarpion densiflori. Bioclimatical diagnosis: Ic 11-22, Itc < 210, Tp 450-1500, Io > 2.2. Typus nominis: Arctostaphylo patulae-Pinion jeffreyi alliancia nova hoc loco. Characteristic species: Arabis rectissima, Arctostaphylos patula subsp. patula, Castilleja martinii, Ceanothus cordulatus, Cercocarpus ledifolius var. intermontanus (t), Cercocarpus ledifolius var. ledifolius (t), Juniperus occidentalis var. australis, Phlox austromontana, Pinus attenuata, Pinus jeffreyi, Viola purpurea subsp. integrifolia.
1. Arctostaphylo patulae-Pinion jeffreyi alliancia nova hoc loco Dry supra-oromediterranean climatophilous or edaphoxerophilous open meso and macroforests of continental tendency, which produce tangel humus, and present their main representation as climatophilous forest vegetation in Sierra Nevada-Transcascadian biogeographical sector on leeward slopes of mountains. Also present in South Californian Ranges sector. In topographic edaphoxerophilous conditions, as permanent communities, they can grow in subhumid ombrotype (Io 3.0-5.5), inside of the series belonging to the Querco kelloggi-Abietion lowianae and Abietion magnificae alliances. Bioclimatical diagnosis: Ic 18-22, Itc < 210, Tp 550-1500, Io 2.2-3.0(5.5). Typus nominis: Junipero australis-Pinetum jeffreyi associatio nova hoc loco. Characteristic species: Arctostaphylos patula subsp. platyphylla, Arctostaphylos pringlei subsp. drupacea, Cercocarpus montanus var. macrourus, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, Pinus washoensis, Purshia tridentata var. tridentata (t), Ribes viscosissimum (t), Symphoricarpos oreophilus (t).
1a. Junipero australis-Pinetum jeffreyi associatio nova hoc loco Open mesoforests of Pinus jeffreyi where usually can be found Juniperus occidentalis var. australis and Calocedrus decurrens, as well as Purshia tridentata, Arctostaphylos patula and Artemisia tridentata in the understory. These forest are typical of supra and oromediterranean semicontinental dry belts of Sierra Nevada leeward east mountain slopes (North Californian province) and Transverse Ranges (South Californian province). Due to the increase of the rainfall or the ombrotermic rate with altitude (Io > 3.0) the Pinus jeffreyi climacic pine-forest gradually hands over to Castanopsio sempervirentis-Abietetum lowianae forest in Sierra Nevada, and in San Bernardino Mountains, where they curiously do not have Purshia tridentata, to Querco kelloggii-Abietetum concoloris forests, both pertaining to the Querco kelloggii-Abietion lowianae alliance. In similar bioclimatic situations in San Pedro Mártir Mountains in Baja California (North Bajocalifornian Highland subsector, South Californian Highland sector) the Pinus jeffreyi forests correspond to the geosinvicariant association Symphoricarpo oreophylli-Pinetum jeffreyi. Because of a considerable increase in aridity and continental nature towards the east (Io < 2.2, Ic > 21), they are replaced by the pynion-pine forests of Junipero australis-Pinetum monophyllae, peculiar to the Intermountain province areas (Great Basin region). Diagnosis bioclimática: Ic 18-22, Itc < 210, Tp 550-1500, Io 2.2-3.0. Relevé typus: Rivas-Martínez reg. num. 1996b:132d, 04.09.1996, achieved with Drs. L. Llorens and D. Sánchez-Mata. Site: Lassen County (California), Modoc National Forest, hill slopes of Big Valley Mountains, near Bieber, 41º05'N-121º15'W, surface 200 m2, altitude 1450 m, orientation SE, inclination 20%. Phisiognomy and habitat: Pinus jeffreyi and Juniperus occidentalis var. australis open macroforest with scrubs in the understory, 25-28 m high and 80 cm trunk diameter, tangel andosol on basalt bedrock; adjacent edafohygrophilous riparian forest vegetation: Populus balsamifera subsp. trichocarpa community. Stimate bioclimatic factors: Mediterranean pluviseasonal oceanic semicontinental (Ic ~ 19.0), upper supramediterranean (Itc ~ 140), upper dry (Io ~ 2.9). Biogeographical location: Californian region, North Californian province, Sierra Nevada-Transcascadian sector, Sierra Nevada subsector. Floristic combination: Calocedro-Pinetea jeffreyi characteristic species: 4 Pinus jeffreyi, 3 Juniperus occidentalis var. australis, 2 Arctostaphylos patula, 2 Calocedrus decurrens, 2 Ceanothus velutinus, 1 Phoradendron juniperinum, + Prunus emarginata, 2 Purshia tridentata (t), (+) Quercus kelloggii; companion species: 1 Festuca californica, 1 Hordeum jubatum, + Artemisia tridentata.
1b. Ceanotho velutini-Pinetum ponderosae associatio nova hoc loco Open climatophilous macroforests of Pinus ponderosa var. ponderosa and Pinus contorta var. murrayana, with a Purshia tridentata, Ceanothus velutinus and Arctostaphylos patula shrubby understory, mediterranean pluviseasonal, oceanic semicontinental. These forest can be found in upper supramediterranean and lower dry oromediterranean belts, on andosoles with tangel, in leeward slopes of the Cascadian Range east side in the biogeographical Transcascadian subsector (Sierra Nevada-Transcascadian sector) in Oregon. Due to fire and tree felling are replaced by secondary forests dominated by Pinus contorta var. murrayana. Because of a considerable increase in aridity and continental nature towards the east (Ic > 21, Io < 2.0) Pinus ponderosa var. ponderosa forests are replaced by Juniperus occidentalis var. occidentalis (Juniperetum occidentalis: Artemisio tridentatae-Juniperetea osteospermae) open microforests peculiar to Harney Basin sector (Columbian Plateau province, Great Basin region). Bioclimatical diagnosis: Ic 18-21, Tp 1100-700, Io 2.0-3.0. Relevé typus: Rivas-Martínez reg. num. 1996b:116, 03.09.1996, achieved with Drs. L. Llorens and D. Sánchez-Mata. Site: Klamath County (Oregon), Deschutes National Forest, slopes of Odeff Butte near Crescent Lake, 43º25'N-121º50'W, surface 200 m2, altitude 1490 m, orientation S, inclination 25%. Phisiognomy and habitat: Pinus ponderosa var. ponderosa open macroforest with Pinus contorta var. murrayana and Purshia tridentata, Arctostaphylos patula, Ceanothus velutinus and Castanopsis sempervirens in the understory, 28-32 m high and 120 cm trunk diameter, tangel andosol on basaltic bedrock; secondary pyrophitic mesoforest: Purshia tridentata-Pinus contorta var. murrayana community. Stimate bioclimatic factors: Mediterranean pluviseasonal oceanic, semicontinental (Ic ~ 20.0), lower oromediterranean (Tp ~ 850), upper dry (Io ~ 2.8). Biogeographical location: Californian region, North Californian province, Sierra Nevada-Transcascadian sector, Transcascadian subsector. Floristic combination: Calocedro-Pinetea jeffreyi characteristic species: 4 Pinus ponderosa var. ponderosa, 4 Purshia tridentata (t), 2 Arctostaphylos patula, 2 Carex brainerdii, 2 Ceanothus velutinus, 2 Pinus contorta var. murrayana, 2 Apocynum androsaemifolium subsp. pumilum, 1 Castanopsis sempervirens, + Chimaphila umbellata subsp. occidentalis; companion species: 2 Stipa lemmonii, 1 Ribes aureum, + Epilobium angustifolium, + Hordeum jubatum, + Pinus monticola.
1c. Arctostaphylo platyphyllae-Pinetum jeffreyi Peinado, Bartolomé, Delgadillo & Aguado associatio nova hoc loco
In the San Pedro Mártir Range in Baja California, between 2000 and 2600 m, Peinado & al. (1994: 23) described the open forest of Pinus jeffreyi and Abies concolor as belonging to a supramediterranean forest association published as Arctostaphylo platyphyllae-Pinetum jeffreyi. This association can represent very well the open supra-oromediterranean dry macroforests of the North Bajocalifornian Highland subsector which form tangel humus. The inclusion of this association in the Arctostaphylo patulae-Pinion jeffreyi dry supra-oromediterranean Californian alliance does not create problems. According to I.L. Wiggins (1980: 400) in his "Flora of Baja California", Arctostaphylos patula subsp. platyphylla (A. Gray) Wells, is a little bajocalifornian endemism (which J.T. Kartesz (1994) does not recognize in his checklist) that seems to has their optimum in this asociation. As Arctostaphylo platyphyllae-Pinetum jeffreyi is an invalid name according to article 5 of CPN due to not has been designated the obliged nomenclatural type relevé; we choose here as type the relevé 1 in the published table 10 (Acta Botanica Mexicana 29: 22, tb. 10. 1994) to correct this circumstance. Relevé typus: Site: North Baja California (Mexico), Sierra de San Pedro Mártir, from Observatorio to Vallecitos; surface 100 m2, altitude 2300 m. Stimate bioclimatic factors: Mediterranean pluviseasonal oceanic, euoceanic (Ic ~ 15.0), upper supramediterranean (Itc ~ 90), upper dry (Io ~ 2.8). Biogeographical location: Californian region, South Californian province, South Californian Ranges sector, North Baja California Ranges subsector. Floristic combination: Calocedro-Pinetea jeffreyi characteristic species: 3 Pinus jeffreyi, 3 Arctostaphylos patula subsp. platyphylla, 3 Abies concolor, 2 Symphoricarpos oreophilus, 1 Monardella macrantha, 1 Plox austro-montana; companion species: 1 Holodiscus discolor,+ Bromus ciliatus, + Cheilanthes wootoni, + Solidago californica, + Saxifraga odontoloma.
2. Querco vaccinifoliae-Pinion jeffreyi alliancia nova hoc loco Edaphoxerophilous mesoforests rich in Californian serpentinic endemisms, growing on soils of ultramafic bedrock, in subhumid to hyperhumid supra and oromediterranean belts of Sierra Nevada-Transcascadian and Klamath-Ciscascadian sectors and less frequent in the North Coastal sector of the North Californian biogeographical province. These forests grow on unfertile soils built on magnesian metaliferous ultrabasic rocks rich in olivine (andesites, peridotites, etc.), which develope chloritic clays with a little ionic change capacity and water retention; moreover these soils have a high plant toxicity due to the heavy metals. Bioclimatical diagnosis: Ic 11-21, Itc < 210, Tp 500-1500, Io > 3.0. Typus nominis: Querco vaccinifoliae-Pinetum jeffreyi associatio nova hoc loco. Characteristic species: Allium hoffmanii, Ceanothus prostratus subsp. pumilus, Fritillaria purdyi, Lomatium howellii, Monardella follettii, Monardella villosa subsp. sheltonii, Penstemon newberryi, Penstemon laetus subsp. roezlii, Quercus garryana var. breweri, Quercus vaccinifolia, Streptanthus barbatus, Tauschia glauca.
2a. Querco vaccinifoliae-Pinetum jeffreyi associatio nova hoc loco Open mesoforests with Pinus jeffreyi and Juniperus occidentalis var. australis as dominant trees; Quercus vaccinifolia and Arctostaphylos nevadensis grow also as dominant shrubs in the understory together several nanophanerophytes and chamephytes. They are mainly distributed along the oromediterranean subhumid-humid territories of the Sierra Nevada biogeographical subsector (Sierra Nevada-Transcascadian sector) growing on slight serpentinic soils developed on olivine ultrabasic rocks which produce brucitic clays. Bioclimatical diagnosis: Ic 18-21, Tp 500-1000, Io 3.0-9.0. Relevé typus: Rivas-Martínez reg. num. 1996b: 2, 26.08.1996, achieved with Drs. L. Llorens and D. Sánchez-Mata. Site: Placer County (California), slopes of McIntosh Hill in Yuba River, close to Cisco, 39º15'N-120º35'W, surface 100 m2, altitude 1800 m, orientation N, inclination 40%. Phisiognomy and habitat: Pinus jeffreyi and Juniperus occidentalis subsp. australis open edaphoxerophilous ultramafic mesoforest with dwarf scrubs (Quercus vaccinifolia and Arctostaphylos nevadensis) in the understory, 12-16 m high and 50 cm trunk diameter, ranker tangel on ultrabasic igneous bedrocks, adjacent climatophilous vegetation: Castanopsio sempervirentis-Abietetum lowianae, adjacent edaphohygrophilous forest vegetation: Populus balsamifera subsp. trichocarpa-Populus angustifolia community. Stimate bioclimatic factors: Mediterranean pluviseasonal oceanic, semicontinental (Ic ~ 19.0), lower oromediterranean (Itc ~ 850), upper subhumid (Io ~ 5.0). Biogeographical location: Californian region, North Californian province, Sierra Nevada-Transcascadian sector, Sierra Nevada subsector. Floristic combination: Calocedro-Pinetea jeffreyi characteristic species: 4 Quercus vaccinifolia, 3 Pinus jeffreyi, 2 Arctostaphylos nevadensis, 2 Juniperus occidentalis var. australis, 2 Penstemon laetus subsp. roezlii, 1 Arctostaphylos patula, + Amelanchier pumila, + Calocedrus decurrens, + Pinus contorta var. murrayana; companion species: 2 Cheilanthes gracillima, 2 Physocarpus capitatus, 1 Eriogonum marifolium, 1 Hordeum jubatum, 1 Pellaea mucronata subsp. californica.
2b. Aspidoto densae-Pinetum jeffreyi associatio nova hoc loco Open micro-mesoforests with Pinus jeffreyi and Calocedrus decurrens as dominant trees; several chamephyte and grassy hemicryptophyte plants are frequent as Ceanothus prostratus subsp. pumilus, Aspidotis densa and Elymus arizonicus. They are widely distributed along the supramediterranean subhumid areas of the Klamath subsector areas (Klamath-Ciscascadas sector, North Californian biogeographical province) growing on reddish slight andosols with tangel humus developed on eruptive ultrabasic rocks (peridotites). Bioclimatical diagnosis: Ic 17-21, Itc 80-190, Tp 900-1400, Io 3.0-4.5. Relevé typus: Rivas-Martínez reg. num. 1995c: 17, 25.07.1995, achieved with Drs. F. Alcaraz, J. Delgadillo & M. Peinado. Site: Siskiyou County (California), Klamath National Forest, Yreka River, hill slopes near Yreka, 41º40'N-122º40'W, surface 400 m2, altitude 1080 m, orientation E, inclination 30%. Phisiognomy and habitat: Open edaphoxerophilous ultramafic micro-mesoforest of Pinus jeffreyi and Calocedrus decurrens with a dense dwarf-scrubby and grassy understory, 5-15 m high and 60 cm trunk diameter, tangel andosol on ultrabasic igneous serpentinic bedrocks, adjacent climatophilous forest vegetation: Quercus garryana-Pinus ponderosa community. Stimate bioclimatic factors: Mediterranean pluviseasonal oceanic, semicontinental (Ic ~ 18.0), upper supramediterranean (Itc ~ 140), lower subhumid (Io ~ 3.6). Biogeographical location: Californian region, North Californian province, Klamath-Ciscascadian sector, Klamath subsector. Floristic combination: Calocedro-Pinetea jeffreyi characteristic species: 4 Pinus jeffreyi, 3 Calocedrus decurrens, 3 Ceanothus prostratus subsp. pumilus, 2 Aspidotis densa, 2 Phlox hirsuta, 1 Penstemon laetus subsp. roezlii, + Arctostaphylos viscida, + Lomatium howellii, + Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii; companion species: 3 Elymus arizonicus, 2 Achillea millefolium var. occidentalis, 2 Festuca idahoensis, 1 Penstemon filiformis, 1 Poa bulbosa f. vivipara, + Eriogonum nudum, + Thlaspi montanum var. californicum.
