The Charles
Babbage’ Research Seminar
on Social Sciences of Work was set up -under the direction
of Professor Juan José Castillo Alonso-
on December 21st 1993 at the Department of Sociology III of
the Faculty of Political Sciences and Sociology of the University
Complutense of Madrid (Spain).
This Seminar is made up of university professors, PhD students,
researchers and entrepreneurial professionals in the field of
Social Sciences who are committed to the research and study
of work (and related issues) considered as a multidimensional
phenomenon.
This research group takes the name of Charles
Babbage (1791-1871) -mathematician
who became a pioneer in the field of the sociological analysis
of work with the publication of his book On the Economy of Machinery
and Manufactures in 1832- as a tribute to his ground-breaking
contribution. This book was translated into Spanish in 1835
by José Díaz Imbrechts [Tratado de mecánica
práctica y Economía Política].
