Biography: I graduated in Chemistry from the Universidad de Granada in 1986, PhD in Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1990. I am Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) since 2010, with a leave of absence). I am currently holding an IKERBASQUE research professorship at the CIC Biomagune since 2018.  I recently held the position of Head of Advanced Imaging Unit of the Spanish Cardiovascular Research Center (CNIC) for five years, up to February 2017, when I returned to my previous faculty position at the UCM. Since 2008, I am also a member of the Ciber of Respiratory Diseases (Ciberes), as head of one of the associated research groups, and since the end of 2015, I am the assistant Director of Research of Ciberes.

I have led several EU initiatives and coordinated a Marie Curie European network projects. I have participated in more than 57 projects funded under competitive basis, 41 as IP (5 of them European), 6 as coordinator (1 of them European). I am co-author of over 225 articles and book chapters. I am co-inventor of seven patents, four of them European, and I was a founding partner of a technology-based company Numio Technologies (Numio Tecnologias SL), who is still on business.

My current research focus is in Pulmonary Hypertension and some other cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. I am addressing the identification of new (early) imaging, biosignals and system biology derived markers useful for the diagnosis and monitoring of new treatments of these diseases. I am particularly interested in the role of new molecular and functional imaging techniques in early diagnosis of vascular remodelling, the assessment of metabolic changes associated with it, and the evaluation of cardio-vascular coupling.
